Possibly the most controversial episode in the career of Wishbone Ash was the release of the album Trance Visionary in April 1998 through Invisible Hands Music. This project was basically a collaboration between Andy Powell and producer/remix specialist Mike Bennett of ‘drum n’bass’ dance music built around samples and loops from classic Wishbone Ash tracks (the original writers of the tracks going uncredited).
Soundbites containing the voices of Martin Turner and Miles Copeland were added to the mix, although neither had any part in the compilation of the album).
Although the album was largely disowned by dyed in the wool Wishbone Ash fans – some claiming the album should never have featured the group’s name – the album sold extremely well amongst the dance fraternity, by far outstripping the sales of the previous mainstream Wishbone Ash album Illuminations. The music was extensively featured on the London club scene, although a scheduled tour to promote the album was curtailed after just one London date.
“The idea for Trance Visionary was to be faithful to the Wishbone Ash guitar brief whilst manipulating the technology available to enhance the possibilities of exploring a wider spectrum, at the same time experimenting with an exciting assortment of hypnotic sounds and pulses,” said producer Bennett.
