The idea of recording classic Wishbone Ash music in an acoustic style had been on Andy Powell’s mind for many years, but did not come to fruition until 1999 and the release of Bare Bones, recorded with the core line-up of Powell, Ray Weston, Mark Birch and Bob Skeat in addition to an eclectic range of musical guests. The brief was to give the latest line-up a chance to re-work some old Ash standards in an acoustic vein as well as record some new songs.
The old standards revisited included Powell’s composition ‘Wings of Desire’ from Strange Affair, ‘Everybody Needs a Friend’ (from Wishbone Four) and, most surprisingly a completely re-worked ‘Living Proof’, performed in a slow, bluesy style with Andy’s son AJ on percussion. Various guests contributed to the album including former backing vocalist Claire Hamill and Mick Parker (accordion) and Lewis Gibson (fiddle) who both contributed to ‘Errors of My Way’; Morwenna Lasko (violin) and Paul Moran (Hammond organ) who played on a new version of ‘Master of Disguise’ (from Just Testing) and Giles Headley (harmonica) and Chris Davis (Dobro) who played on ‘Hard Times’.
Four new songs were also recorded: ‘You Won’t Take Me Down’ was written by Mike Bennett; ‘(Won’t You Give Him) One More Chance’ was a cover of the Solomon Burke hit; ‘Love Abuse’ had originally been demoed circa Illuminations bt was completely re-recorded for Bare Bones, while ‘Baby Don’t Mind’ was an Andy Powell song which Wishbone had first attempted to record in 1979.
