George - I agree with what you said about those fortunate enough to see the original lineup. Im only 19 and first saw the band at the Birmingham Library gig in 1992 - so with regards to both mk1 and mk2, I only have my small video collection (which I'm trying to build up if anyone wishes to help!) to enjoy performances of these lineups. Feeg - email me regarding the Town & Country gig.

Greetings to all, Wishbone Ash will be hitting Portland Oregon on the 21st of February and I could not be more thrilled. I'd like to pose a question to the group. What is the band's official or unofficial taping policy? I would dearly love to capture them live to DAT on that evening. Do they allow board access or an audience recording only. Any live recording is for trade only and absolutely NFS!! And of course I would give a copy to the band. Please email me with any info or contacts regarding my request. Thanks for your time.

I remember taping a shortened version of the Town adn Country Concert but unfortunately taped over it by mistake. I would love to hear it again so if anyone knows how i can get a copy please let me know. I do remember thinking that Why Dont We and Throw Down the Sword were brilliant that night, especially Why Dont We which seemed a better version than on the Colston Hall Anniversary concert the year before. On another subject, looking back now, Wishbone were up against some pretty stiff competition round about 1978-1982. Led Zep, Rainbow, Sabbath, Thin Lizzy were all major groups and i remember seeing the likes of UFO playing good stuff also at that time. New British groups like Saxon etc were also beginning to break new ground. I find it hard to remember now how Wishbone thought of themselves, whether they looked on bands like the above as direct competition. Also, would it be fair to say that when it came to a rank order, Wishbone were in the Second List with Zeppelin etc in the first league?

Yes I have got the Town and County gig on video, and I do love the band , but I still think that Ted had lost something after being out of the band for so long. There again I loved his early work with the band, but I think Laurie fitted in perfectly and made some of my finest Ash moments, as well as some great gigs. As a matter of interest does everyone know that Ted made a guest appearance on John Lennon's Imagine album.

George, I love what you said about the MK1 line-up, chemistry, and Laurie's entry into the band. Fat Drummer, sorry about the e-mail! I'm not on the other message board yet. And for Mike Rule and Feeg, it's great to hear compliments for Steve Upton! I think his style was really unique, just as Martin's, and the two of them together were just phenomenal; more than a rhythm section, that doesn't do them justice. I have been thinking that if Steve wasn't a great drummer (and percussionist, I might add) that something would've gone amiss with Martin playing lead bass and melody. But it worked really beautifully and gave Wishbone a foundation unlike any other band I've ever listened to. And Mike and Brian, yes, I love Martin's vocals and have spent more hours than I could possibly count listening to him without growing tired of his voice. That's a lot coming from me. There are very few I can say that about. For me, listening to WA is like spending time with my best friend. Actually, music is my best friend and always has been since I was a kid. I imagine I would be a totally different person if I'd done something besides listen to music, but that was what I loved to do, and I can't imagine it being any other way. I probably should've learned to play an instrument.

Mike, if you mean the gig of 5/3/1990 then you are absolutely right. I have it on video (Gary C thx again!) and watch a few times a month at least. Not only did Ted play the guitar brilliantly, but his vocal was also superb, remember Jail bait? Steve's leaving the band was also a disaster, no doubt. Anyway, I don't think I have ever seen such a load of energy and vitality from any other WA line ups, they really were on fire then!

Mike, I think anyone fortunate enough to have seen the MKI line-up will remember that one of the main reasons this band rose to fame above so many others was due to the extraordinary talents that came together to make such original music and great live performances. Sometimes referred to as 'chemistry'. Most bands would not have survived the departure of a Ted Turner, but due to great judgement and maybe some luck, Laurie fitted in so well and actually inspired a new direction and vitality. There is only one Steve Upton as there is only one Andy, Ted and Martin. We are very fortunate to have Andy still giving us new recording and gigs. And a couple of great tribute bands giving us a taste of the past. However I guess I am not alone in hoping that even for a one-off, we will get the chance to see a MKI or II live performance again.

Re 'Ted's sloppiness'. I think in the whole of the 20th anniversary gig he makes one mistake - for a whole gigs worth thats pretty impressive. However, have many people seen the Town & Country Club gig from 1990. An amazing selection of tracks played with more energy and precision than Ive ever heard from a Wishbone concert - beats the anniversary gig into the ground! That is one reason why Steve Upton's leaving seems more of a loss - the band were on fire at that point!!!! Anyone agree??

Just wanted to know what Merv was up to these days, he was one of my college tutors at the Shelley Campus,I learned a lot from him and Jase Fillingham, though I don't know if they would remember me, I was there at the same time as people such as Jaz Soor, Martin Bagot, Adrian Mills, Mark Weaver,Nik Wall etc. I am still writing songs, playing drums &guitar(I played rhythm guitar on the rendition of "Lyin' Eyes" in Ray Johnson's recording lesson,-and not many people know this, but Jase played the bass part!. Happy days!,would like to see both Jase and Merv again I have beaten cancer twice in the last 3 years and am still kicking!. Keep on rockin' boys!.

Chris Auld, Yes I have seen the 20 th Anniversary concert, that was why I thought Ted was sloppy !!! Laurie on the 'Marquee' video was superb, although Andy was very subdued. I've been a fan since the beginning when I bought the 'Blind Eye' single. I have every album since. I'm 48 and still love the band. Bona Fide is a great album , back on form big time. Raw to the Bone was dreadful. I have the 'tape' versions of Hear to Here, Strange Affair' and Live in Chicago, but have never seen the C. D'S.

Henry, e are all cracking on a bit, not many of us have a full head of hair, and our own teeth, some have stopped growing upwards and went OUTWARDS instead. (see Fat Drummer. Musically, we have a superb band playing the great music we all got hooked on. We have been described by some as an extended family. From Wishbone related events, i got "friends" all over the world, we share a passion for a few things, but top of that list is WISHBONE ASH music. We bithc and whine ocasionally, we have disagreements just like any family, but when these four guys hit a stage anywhere in the world, all past ills are forgiven. Gigs are not what you may imagine, it isnt a bunch of iddle aged, fat boring old farts nodding away in nostalgic harmony, you would be surprised how many bring their kids along, and how many of those kids enjoy things as much as their wrinkleys. So, Spring tour dates can be found at www.wishboneash.com. BE THERE, see what you are missing and you never know, one of us may just buy you a pint. (not me, I am poor)

Numerous gigs. 4 Ash Conventions. Jeez Henry...you've got some catching up to do!! Don't dally any longer!

Hey Henry I bought those first 3 albums too and have to admit that it was then that the band were at their creative peak, but that doesn't mean that much of the output since isn't worth listening to. As for you not recognising any membes apart from Andy, do not despair! I think if you went to see them now you'd be hooked again. And their latest album Bona Fide is very good too. Go and see them if you can on the spring tour. The current musos put on a damn good show & can guarantee you'll be dusting those LP's off after that. Don't be put off by any debate/nit-picking, mate. If you can't get to a live gig, then Live Dates I, II & III are all extremely worthy representations of the band's performances throughout the years. Go for it!

I stumbled on this site purely by accident, and looking at the clock I see I've been here for over an hour. It seems like just a few minutes. Suddenly makes me feel old too. I bought Wishbone Ash, Pilgrimage and Argus when the came out. Thought they were really great. Wishbone 4 was a disappointment as were all the other albums I bought - everyone up to Twin Barrels Burning. Was that 20 years ago ? That was the year I got married and life changed. All the old alums went into the back of the wardrobe in the spare room, and I suppose they're still gathering dust there today. I haven't heard of any of the latest line-up apart from Andy. Will I get interested in the again. Probably not. 30 years on, the Argus that I remember was a brilliant album. I can't see any mileage in looking at all the new stuff, hoping for a Mark 2. For those who are fans of the latest incarnation, I send my best wishes. May the band give you as much pleasure as they did to me all those years ago.

Adding a point on the vocals and drumming, the Tracks CD recently out has a fantastic rendition of Persephone. Martin Turners vocals are great on this, perhaps better than on the version on Live DAtes 2. I just dont understand why the song fades out just when the guitar solos are hitting thier peak??. As far as drumming goes, when i saw that Outward Bound was on Tracks, i thought, interesting, lets see how the 2001 version of the band do it. Unfortunately, all i could hear was the slapping of drums all over the place without it would seem , any real purpose or beat.Is it just me? Also, can i mention that having heard Living Proof again on Tracks, i actually now prefer the heavier version played by Andy and Laurie on the Phoenix video at the Marquee in 83'.While appreciating both versions, Andys vocals suit the heavier sound on that song.

I have to agree with Brian - there's just something about Martin's vocals! I also feel this way about Steve's drumming - seeing the band live, I feel there has been an injustice to his contribution - whichever drummer it has been on stage. I know as a drummer myself that everyone has their own style and this should be part of the performance, but sometimes I have left a gig in the last few years with the feeling that it isn't the style that belongs to the song. From a drummers point of view - it would be like Throw Down The Sword with someone else playing the closing solo other than Andy. But hey, things change! But on the other side of the spectrum, I feel Bone Fide is the best studio product of the band since Just Testing - just an excellent album! Anyway, i'll get of my soapbox now, get on the phone and order my tickets for April!

Thanks to everyone for the information regarding "The Alchemist". I'd like to chime in on Live in Chicago. I don't listen to this CD too often because I've never been a huge fan of either Andy's or Ted's voices on the classics. I love Andy on "Strange Affair" and some of the newer material but I just miss Martin Turner's voice on the classics. Now I like the recent albums a lot (Bona Fide is brilliant!) but in a live setting (i.e. Live in Chicago)there's just something lacking vocally, IMHO.

Just reading the recent comments..saw mention of Laurie in Home and his subsequent entry to Wishbone. I think Gary covered it in the "Blowin' Free" book? Home had been a support act to an Ash tour. After Ted's departure, Andy sat in on a few gigs with Al Stewart and Home I caught the 'jam' they had at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY in '74, playing "All Along the Watchtower". You knew immediately this was Ted's replacement! The vibe was there and the rest, as they say, is history.

Re-Live In Chicago: Yes the guitar interplay between Ted & Andy is quite superb, even if Ted is a little heavy handed (loose), but his vocals are a taste of what could have been if he had stuck around after 73. Having said this, with no disrespect meant, the bass/drum mix is pathetic, (i can hear the audience talking louder). Classic Ash was always a fine mix of melodic/soulfull twin lead, growling up front bass, thoughtful drumming & Doris Day like Vocals (joke).

Mike T, I'm with you on this one. Andy and Ted sound great together, but the rhythm section is lacking. Maybe they're good musicians and all, but the very tempo and "gait" of some songs changes to the point that I don't enjoy listening to it. I'm with you, Live Dates II is where it's at for me. I can't find it on cd anywhere here in South Africa so I haven't listened to it for a long time. Brian, It came from you, so I had to check this album out. I'm listening right now. My favorites on first listen are definitely "Fancy Lady, Hollywood Child," "Baby Friend of Mine," "Western Front," and "Lady of the Birds," great bass in that song, by the way. I can definitely pick Laurie's playing out, and it's neat his style really stayed much the same in Wishbone. That's kind of amazing to me, that the band found him and that his playing fit so perfectly with the band. Thanks for bringing this up. Everyone knows that I'm an unabashed Wishbone Ash MK II fan but its taken me forever to find the Home albums. I got the first one last year and I liked it and then I found the Live at the BBC Cd and that is also good. But the second album is just insane. Fantastic! In reply to Ang's request on Argus, i first heard the Argus album probably around 1976. The songs and the themes they used were very interesting to me as the themes of battle, English myth and legend etc seemed to me to be to be direct out of the sort of science fantasy books that i was reading then. The twin guitar sound was definitely different to anything else i had heard and my favourite was always Sometime World. I bought Front Page News in 1977 and have been a fan ever since.

Yes, Billy I indeed HAVE got Here To Hear on cd. Where from?.....a Record Fair about 2 years ago I think...not sure. It seems that a few local bands are having trouble getting bums on seats so he reckons it would be too much of a risk financially. Sorry.

Hello Dee ... Merry Christmas. As you know I am a big Laurie fan and the 'New England' and FPN era are amongst my favorites (spelling just for Dee). So don't feel too special feeg LOL. Hi Feeg, We talked about FPN a while ago & there are others who check in here who really like that album! You're among fellow fans. To clear up a point, it's not really because of Laurie that I love that era the most, although I do like Laurie. It's the songwriting during that timeframe and the way the band was evolving and maturing. I get the impression that Martin was really finding his voice during those years, literally and lyrically. And although I love the heaviness of the first album, I naturally tend to lean more toward the polished sounding stuff. Martin's bass was always audible, but it really got brought out on New England!

Going back to what Dee said, it must be dificult now for Wishbone to know who their audience is, just as it was 20-25 years ago. You had to kep changing and developing, because musical trends changed as well. I remember when Wishbone played Dundee in 1980 on the Just Testing tour, some louts were gobbing on Andy which he didnt like one bit but remember the period. This was a time when punk was in the ascendency and it was considered OK to do this by some people. Looking at Wishbone albums of that time, No Smoke Without Fire (1978) marked a shift to a harder direction by Wishbone after the US based New England and Front Page News albums. Maybe this was a conscious or unconscious shift by Wishbone towards what they perceived was the audience needed to sell records.1978 and onwards was a time of great musical upheaval in the UK and the late70's/80's albums perhaps reflected the heavier rock pervalant at that time.Just a thought. I have to say though that i can listen just as easily to albums such as Front Page News as Argus etc. It isnt a album that seems to get mentioned a lot in this forum but i love FPNews, Come in From the Rain, Heartbeat and a great instrumental 714. Just a different aspect of Wishbones musical progression. Hope this provokes some comment.

Hi everybody! I haven't visited the site for a while, but this is to all WA fans wherever you happen to live - Merry Christmas and all the best in this new coming year. I hope your X-mas is just like mine ; white, frosty and snowy. And if wishes can come true mine would be to see WA in concert in my country. I agree with Dee entirely, Laurie is much underrated! He did a great job on Lorelei and In all of my dreams, to mention but these two. Having said that I still stick to mark I, especially having seen the video with their concert in London 1990 (Gary, salute to you once more!). Now, picture all three of those guitar tycoons playing together with Martin and Steve- this would be really a treat to our, the fans, ears! Let's pray, so that Santa will fulfill this wish before we kick the bucket!

That's a fantastic comparison, Dee. I have always thought that Lindsay Buckingham was underrated as a guitarist. I would like to see Laurie Wisefield step out of the shadows and into something more identifiable. But I guess he's got to make living doing what he's doing now. I'm now listening to a live version of Rest in Peace from Vienna, Aug. 1975 on the Startrucking Tour and it cooks...

I'm another fan of the Laurie era, although I love WA, Argus, and IV. Sorrel is one of my all time favorites! I love Doctor, Everybody Needs a Friend, and Ballad of the Beacon. I wouldn't trade any of those songs for another Argus. In fact, Argus is around 4th on my list, as I put New England, Just Testing, and Wishbone Ash ahead of it. Not that it's not great, it's just that there's life after Argus, and I think THAT'S what the shame was. Music was not the same in 1976 as it was in 1973. It was changing. Sure, I love the early 70s music, and '69-'76 is my favorite era for ALL music. But I would've gotten bored listening to the same type album repeated through the years. I like the way the music changed, with the exception of the 80s albums after Martin left. Also, I do like Laurie's style and the comparison that comes to mind for me is Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. I don't want to call it "bluegrass" but the style of picking he did is similar.

I will say that I was one who was lucky enough to have seen both MkI and MkII Wishbone live. While the "classic Ash" title is largely placed on the pre-Wishbone Four era, it would be hard for me, as others have mentioned, to imagine Ted coming up with playing like that found on "Lorelei", "Living Proof", etc. BOTH versions of the band were huge live. I saw both versions at least twice each and on any given night, that version was the best. I do feel that Wishbone Four WAS and is a good album. When compared to some others that followed (Locked In to some extent and certainly Raw to the Bone)it was, if at all, a very small disappoinment for me. "Ballad of the Beacon" will always be a fave of mine. Andy and I played it at my wedding two years ago. Talk about a moment for me! Being married and playing alongside Andy Powell in the same day- dreams come true! Happy holidays to all our friends in the U.K.!!

i reckon that most people who saw the original mark i line up tend to prefer that period to mark ii, whereas the fans who got into the band in the mark ii period prefer that. as one of the younger fans (!) im in the mark 2 camp. anyway, let's not get onto that one again! i would say wishbone iv was the weakest of the mark 1 albums, similar to locked in with mark 2, but there are still a lot of fans who like those albums. when ted came back in the late 80s i did not expect him to be very good as he had ben out of touch all those years, but in fact he was amazing - it's very disappointing that he seems to have shut himself off again.

I disagree with the comments regarding Ted Turner remaining in WA. IMHO, I think Ted was good for the early progressive stuff but Laurie was much more suitable (except for his vocals, which I admit were a little weak) for the later 70's and 80's stuff. I know people prefer the early stuff (and its great indeed) but Laurie's finger-picking, etc will always give me goose-bumps. I love the original "Phoenix", "The King Will Come", etc but Laurie just seemed to add something special. I also can't see Ted producing late 70's classics like "Living Proof" and "You See Red". I also rank "WBIV" as the worst of their output between 1970 and 1980. Again, just an opinion...Cheers!

Marcus G. I do so agree with you...the build up at the time was fantastic: Wishbone Ash, Pilrgrimage and Argus. Then, in my view, disaster! WA4 was not up to it...too many soppy songs. Son of Argus would have been a great success but i assume the guys had ran out of ideas. I also agree with you Marcus, that Ted may have been the member who added that unusual WA style at that time and his departure was a shame. He showed his style again later with songs such as "Standing in the rain" and many others around that era. In my view, Ted's skills were in his songwriting and probably still are....but when it came to live playing he seemed to make many errors....or so it appears on the videos i have. OK...enough from me...what are the veiws of the loyal fans out there?

I remember Bob Harris host of TOGWT being a big fan of WA's in the early 70's. He would always plug WA in newspaper interviews, i'm sure that's why WA became so popular outside of London, especially just before & after the Argus release. As good an album as Wishbone IV is/was (I think it is their best),if they had released as Steve says 'Son Of Argus' they would probably have achieved icon status worldwide. I think Ted would have been the key if he had hung around long enough. Merry Christmas everyone.

I reckon the 'Year of the gig' performance was screened on a Saturday night when my parents were watching another channel. This was in the days when there was only one TV per house. I switched over to catch Laurie soloing on Helpless (I think) and reckon they played Bad Weather Blues - or is my memory playing tricks? Re the Grey Whistle Test screening of around 1977, seeing Laurie playing on Goodbye Baby was the first time I saw a guitarist fret a note with his playing hand. Anyone else remember this?

Actually, I think the "Year of the Gig" was 1979. I've actually seen this gig on one of those Napster-type free music download sites. They played 4 songs, I believe. I have very grainy video footage with poor sound quality which is from this show which was broadcast all over Europe at the time. I'd love to find a watchable and/or listenable version.

Actually Feeg, I believe that was a benefit for 'The Year of the Child' (1980-ish) and the lads dubbed it 'The Year of the Gig' because it was the only concert they played that year. The concert was headlined by none other than Cat Stevens and this was to be his last ever gig. Hopefully, Gary Carter will give me 'brownie points' for paying attention to every weord of his book! Anyway, like you, I wish there were more videos/DVDs of Wishbone Ash available and hopefully someone can enlighten us on that subject.

I remember seeing Wishbone on TV many years ago playing 2 songs for a benefit concert that might have been called "The Year of the Cat"? They played Living Proof and Helpless. Also remember seeing 2 taped performances on the Old Grey Whistle Test when they played Come in From the Rain and Goodbye Friend. Do they exist on video anywhere? Also, i did have a copy of highlights of their concert played c 1991 which was sponsored by Tennants and took place at the Town and Country Club. I erased it by mistake, Does anyone know if this was released and available to buy? I am pretty certain that Throw Down the Sword on the Tracks CD came from that concert. Thanks, Feeg. N.B. Steve Upton was so great and fit the band so well that I didn't really appreciate him fully until I listened to songs he'd recorded with Wishbone played by one of his successors! I miss his style on later live CDs almost as much as I miss Martin's.
Great songs played by the tribute band. My picks for a live show? Can you imagine one of those "live by request" type shows, with the original band plus Laurie on stage, at our mercy? haha! or a private show where you get to pick every song? If you're gonna dream, dream big! Favorites of mine are Alone, Baby the Angels are Here, Dream Train, Handy, You Rescue Me, Lady Jay, Lifeline, Firesign, Living Proof, Lonely Island, Queen of Torture, Rest in Peace, Say Goodbye, Sometime World, Why Don't We, Sorrel, and Throw Down the Sword! What, too many? There can NEVER be too long of a show!!

Thanks Gary for the set list. The first thing i notice from that is how little there is from the albums that i first heard Ash on i.e. Front Page News, New England and No Smoke Without Fire. Hearing the version of Front Page News on the Tracks CD reminded me how good that song is. Part of it is down to the angle Laurie Wisefield put on each solo.He to me was the best and it is no surprise that many people rate the Mark 2 as the best line up. To prove my point, take a listen to his intro to Phoenix on the 1983 Live at the Marquee video, it is pure genius. For what it is worth, here is my classic Wishbone Set List. Throw Down the Sword, Living Proof, Front Page News, F.U.B.B., Persephone, The King Will Come, You See Red, Warrior,In All Of My Dreams, Sometime World,Why Dont We,No More Lonely Nights, Phoenix and Come in From the Rain. Not only is it great to have the guestbook back, but how bout that new tidbit under Martin's Member Profile???? I'm already lining up a traveling partner in case my husband won't fly! Maybe my dream will come true after all? Also, I've been listening to "New England" again the past few days, that and discs 2 and 3 of the "Distillations" set. I was also listening to "Strange Affair" quite a bit and recommend everyone pull this one out and play it a few times and remember how good it really is. I think it gets overlooked. One song that has really grown on me is "Some Conversation." I remember the first few times I'd heard it I didn't think much about it as it sounded different and "mature" somehow compared to other Wishbone songs. But I've found that I'm entirely receptive to that idea and think it's a great song and sung by Martin from a very real and sincere place, if you know what I mean.

Just a reminder that we REALLY NEED FEEDBACK so that the DOUBLE HEADER venture can be organised to suit as many people as possible. We especially would like anyone interested to state wether they would attend ,north, south or midlands/yorkshire etc so that we can gauge the venue location[s]and size etc. Come on folks help out please so that we can help you.

Moonstone will be playing at The Golden Lion in Pontefract on Friday 10th Jan. and at The Crimea Tavern in Castleford on Friday 31st Jan. More dates will be posted on our website (where there is now a, so far, empty guestbook)in the near future.
The band is keen to get this double header thing off the ground and whilst we're really not bothered about making money out of it we don't wish to lose it either. Billy is prepared to work hard to make it happen so whilst feedback is something we'd normally try to avoid, on this issue it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, John

Yes Eddie the weekend would be a must. A link up with Martin would be tremendous ofcourse let me just check the Blue Bishop's dates. If there is only one gig happens it would be a good idea to have it on an afternoon as this would help enormously for people travelling distances and for any kids being DRAGGED along by eager parentsLOL. Would probably mean hiring a place but will investigate this. Cheers for now Billy

Can we assume that any joint Moonstone/Ashbone-U-Wish gig would be staged at the weekend? I see that the Blue Bishops are apparently venturing North in January and February. Would there be any mileage in seeing if there would be any interest in them performing at the event also, at a late afternoon/evening event? A chance to see Martin Turner playing live again could only add to the appeal. Any thoughts or I am wishing for too much?

Hi Fatio

your help would be most appreciated and that goes for anyone else who might have contacts with venues etc.Still early days yet concerning just exactly the best way to go with this idea. Both bands are well up for it but know that they can't possibly please everyone geographically speaking. They also don't want to go to a lot of expense running up and down the country if the support is not there so we need a lot of feedback to help make it happen and to satisfy the status quo[no not the band!!!] We would dearly love to satisfy everyone but know that's not possible. The north east WA fans would be very supportive so the Office would probably be great if you could help out there Fats. Please don't contact just yet 'til we know how things are shaping up.If it turns out that only 1 gig is possible how would Leeds suit everyone? It is very accessible and relatively central for most folks. We understand that those of you who would like to get along would have a fair bit of expense so think of ways of sharing cars etc to keep costs to a minimum. If we go down the 3 gig route then we would like some suggestions of good venues not necessarily in London, maybe Oxford ? that might help fans from south west to be tempted along as well.So the possible venues so far THE OFFICE South Shields and THE NEW ROSCOE Leeds. Again these are just suggestions for the moment but look most promising. Feedback would be much appreciated

Cheers Billy

FAO: Billy let me know if things are looking possible for a gig up in the frozen north for Moonstone/Ashbone and i'll try to see if I can get something set up at The Office. No promises, but they do show a lot of tribute bands so they could well be interested. Just post on here or message me on the other board.

Know what you mean about the north east rockin' so maybe if we can get enough feedback on this double header idea then we might manage to extend it to 3 gigs, south.midlands and north. Will have to get the bands to knock heads over it and see how,if possible this could be organised. i dont like being the last person to post either but hopefully this will be a popular topic. i have seen both bands and they are both brilliant - lets get it on! the ideal venue would be the standard, walthamstow which moonstone actually played at a few years ago. but i suppose a more neutral venue might be somewhere in the midlands. dont say mansfield leisure centre as i think a club gig would be far preferable. any other opinions?

I thought the Moonstone set was a great feature of the recent AshCon event. It was the first time I have seen them play and along with everyone else present, I thought their performance was as remarkable as it was pleasurable. If you like quality live music and you like Ash music then they are an unbeatable combination. It was not the quality of their playing that was remarkable, as their musicianship was evident – but rather it was their feel for music, which I found astonishing in such a young band. I have never seen Ashbone-U-Wish but if they perform to a similar standard, then a double billing would be a delightful prospect and I am sure many fans would be interested in such an event.

As I understand it, Ash tribute bands are somewhat scarce in places like the US, so maybe we should appreciate the fact that we do have bands such as Moonstone rather than knocking them. I think Billy would be just as keen on Moonstone, even if Chris was not involved – but as he is justifiably proud father, why shouldn’t he blow his trumpet once in a while. Moonstone and Billy are equally relevant in this forum. Billy, as they say in Ireland…”take plenty of no notice!”

Get real Andrew!!! Silly question really. Are you a father Andrew? If so you would understand why your question is silly and if you are not then the question still remains silly. I ofcourse am proud of my sons' achievments as musicians as well as their academic successes but be assured that I know a good rock band when I hear one and would in no way try to kid myself or my sons if I thought they were not good enough to be praised or promoted. My opinion of their abilities is shared by many.I've never heard Ashbone-u-Wish and have no involvement with them yet I am happy to make the suggestion of the double header gig only for the benefit of WA fans who might like to have it happen. You may have noticed that i have not tried to disguise the fact that i am the father of 2 of the band members as would have been easy to do.Hope that answers your silly question andrew.

A proud Dad....Billy

I managed to catch moonstone at the crimea in castleford last night, apart from the sets at ashcons it’s the 1st time I’ve seen a full set. The audience was typical of a general rock venue, the music prior to the gig being the standard Led Zep, Bad co etc.
The gig consisted of a 2 ¼ hour set with a 20min break in the middle, good value by any standards never mind a free gig.
The 1st half of the show consisted more or less of the set played at ashcon the second with a few more classic argus tracks and some recently neglected material dream train and where were you tomorrow coming across strongest.
I think most of the crowd recognised blowing free and some of the other argus stuff but the band did a great job pulling the audience round with the classic twin guitar, bass harmonies and duels played brilliantly, decent enough vocals (the house pa sounded a bit dodgy) a tight rhythm section augmented by (on some songs) an incisive keyboard rhythm and at times lead saxophone. Indeed it’s the first time I’ve heard the intro to sometime world played on sax, the solo on strange affair being particularly impressive.
This band really know their stuff and play the classics with a feeling and energy sometimes lost in “tribute bands”, their tribute because of the inclusion of the keyboard/sax is more a tribute to the music rather than just an ability to copy WA.
All in all a great gig and if you get chance get along to see these guys you won’t be disappointed, it was nice to hear that through moonstone half the crowd will be surfing the ash sites and checking the cd racks.
Just an observation not a criticism when moonstone played their own material it went down as well as the ash numbers, I’d like to see more of their own stuff in the set.
If Chris or Mark are out there post the gig address in Pontefract next Friday.
ASHCON SOS.
Mark was telling me that the photos they took at Ashcon haven’t turned out can you help by posting/mailing any you have.

I would like to see a jam session for guitarists and an audience selection for 1 or 2 maybe to get the chance during the afternoon acoustic session to join the band on stage for a song or two as well. The players could be selected from an early upstairs open floor spot.Vocals have always been a bone of contention with the Bones so howzabout a few singers having a go as well and again maybe get the chance to join the band!!??!!.So come on all you bedroom players and singers get practicing!! AshCon 2002 has been and gone – many thanks to the organisers and volunteers for putting together a great day. I took my brother along to the event (he was a long, long dormant Ash fan) and he was knocked out at how friendly and communicative the fans and the band were.

In the afternoon we picked up some hard to find CD’s, really liked Moonstone’s warm up set (Chris Auld and the boys can certainly play) and really enjoyed the brief Ash acoustic set. Guy Roberts treated us to some “tasters” of long lost tape recordings of Ash session from years gone by, some material from which might be released.

In the evening, I cannot say that I enjoyed the Illumunida set at all but the extended Ash performance later capped a truly enjoyable day. To be honest, I thought that Ash looked a little tired to begin with but I guess this was inevitable at the end of a very busy bout of touring. However the great audience feedback fired them up pretty quickly and they finished stronger than ever. Bob Skeat again caught the eye and makes it look so easy and effortless. He looks as if he has always been there.

Andy Powell said that the concert was being recorded so hopefully it will eventually make it to CD. Perhaps someone in the know can advise on when this is likely to be? Lastly, what would the possibility and people’s views to the suggestion of an extended acoustic set as the major feature at the next AshCon event?

Hi all Hope you all have a great time at AshCon. Just to let you know that an interview I did with Andy Powell is going to be published soon in a magazine called "Fireworks". Andy covers a whole range of topics, ranging from what it's like to be in the Ash in the 21st century in comparison with days gone by, the new album, "Argus", etc. "Fireworks" is worth a shufty if you're into Classic / Meloduc Rock in general. You can get it from certain independant record shops, Virgin Megastores, or from www.rathole.com . There's also a review of "Bona Fide", and an interview with Runrig, who are well worth a listen if you like Celtic-influenced rock - "The Stamping Ground", their newie, is a cracker! Cheers! Rich

Billy, its been thought of. a few technical problems with it. I want to do it one year, preferably when len gets over to handle it all. I am an oldie remember (tho not as ancient as some). Its too late for this year but certainly a wish for a future AshCon

Just for the record and NOT by way of reply to the last foul mouthed rantings. I've known Gary Carter for a few years now and would like to say here that Gary is one of the most intelligent people I know. He was a postman when I met him and I said to him at the time that his journalistic skills enhanced with his amazing power of recall would be better put to use in journalism. I still think that and feel that Gary would make an excellent journalist. The gift that Gary has belies any foolish, ignorant nonsense that he of four letter vocabulary spews out. There are many ways to gain an education and you only need to open your eyes and ears to understand that letters after your name don't mean you are intelligent or more able than the next man. Hi Bobby et all, getting a bit cryptic around here seems a trap is being sprung!!! Now let's talk WA. Andy I've just had a thought for ASHCON. How realistic would it be to have a screen relaying fans best wishes through the forums etc? especially for the Q+A section.Maybe a laptop linked to screen? Or would this be the straw to break your back? Billy

Gary, no probs about the hair at least, despite a few silver 'highlights'! As regards the photo, I have not yet come across a camera strong enough for me! And Billy, the bar needs to be well-stocked and well subsidised.....

Well Billy, if the forum folk do meet up, be sure to get someone to take a photo - I want to see how many of you old folk have still got your own hair & teeth!

Hi Gary, I'll be coming off night shift on the morning of the convention so the day will probably become a blur by about 5.00pm 'til closing time. Anyone who expects to get any sense out of me would be well advised to speak to me as early as possible! as for M.C'ing the day I think I'll have to pre-record and get a cardboard cut out stood at the mic. OK'before you all say it " who'd notice the difference anyway!!!" I will probably have to get a nap in the car before the night gigs. I will ofcourse avoid any lock in situations!!! Really looking forward to seeing moonstone and Iluminada playing as well. Just a thought while I'm here, why don't we have a Forum Folk meeting place and have everyone who posts on the forums wear their names so we can meet up for a laugh, hows about the upstairs bar ALL DAY!!! cheers fur noo Billy

Bobby, I've no idea what the fool said, but I do know I'm getting sick of tossers like him posting on this message board - I visit here to have a laugh with Billy, Andy, Mike, yourself etc etc - not read the crap posted by bitter individuals with an axe to grind.

Andy, that might swing it, but I've heard Mr Owen's personal appearance fees are way beyond the Ashcon budget. Although I suppose he might do it for free if we show him a picture of Billy and say it would make an old man very happy! (only joking Mr Auld!)

Well it seems as if Andy is doing his level best to take care of everyone who is attending Ashcon this year! Unfortunately prior commitments (I will be getting pissed and thinking of you all) mean I cannot attend this year, but I look forward to hearing about it from you all. Hope everyone has a great time.

I guess 99.9% agree with the "ignore the prats" approach. and tho he is way to modest to say it BILLY sugested it weeks ago. Its a good plan. Now to AshCon (5 days to go and counting. I am getting phone calls and emails asking if tickets will be available on the door, the answer YES, just mail me and I'll make sure people get in. Also, its a Family event, has to be now we are all getting old, and any kids under 14 are FREE. A Cafe and bar and coffee facility is available on site, so dont go worrying about those things, We havent progressed to a cresh yet but maybe next time if needed. Mail for tickets to be available and SEE YOU NEXT SATURDAY. Anyone requiring special assistance, wheelchair access etc... let me know and I will make arrangements.

I agree with the 'ignore the prat' line, but it's when they start using nom de plumes that people will start to lose interest for fear (or annoyance) at their name being used by somebody else.

agree, the general idea should be to TOTALLY ignore any prats who appear here - no replies, rebukes of any sort without exception. Those who join in are as bad as those who start the trouble.

i would not object to signing up, but no doubt a lot of people would so i reckon we should try and keep things as they are. some people just like to look at the messages without posting. the problem is with a very small minority (1?). i think we should just say "ok will, point taken" and leave it at that

Gary, please dont introduce a sign up system. There are enough of these forums on the net already. I for one dont like submitting my e-mail address unless necessary and I believe that should remain an individuals right. This forum is special because of its 'open to all' stance, so why change things just because of one or two trouble maker - you get them in any walk of life. There was a nasty fight at my local Friday night, but I don't see the landlord shutting up shop or introducing a membership system. This forum is just great as it is. Ignore the idiots and as gary says they will go away when they know their only talking to themselves

Gary S/Andy Y - I can appreciate your point re: introducing a registered users system, and would be interested to hear what others have to say. One point to bear in mind is that there are really two different types of postings which appear here 1) those from the "regular" group of posters, who wish to engage in interactive discussion, etc, and 2) those who just simply want to leave a brief one off message to say "great site", "shite site" or "enjoyed the show last night", etc. (actually there seems to be a third element who's only motive is to disrupt, but that's another story...). I do feel that by introducing a sign up system it will put the "one off" posters off of contributing, which would be a shame - after all, not everyone wants to "join" a "club" and, as I said, I can respect some peoples desire to keep their e-mail private to avoid spam (eg. junk mail, not the ex-WA vocalist!). I know a lot of people seem to enjoy the spontenaity and less regimented feel of the "free forum" approach. But...I would be interested to hear what regular users of this forum feel. For the time being I will be monitoring the guestbook on a more regular basis and anything corruptive in future will be immediately removed. Obviously there is a fine line between what is acceptable and what isn't and I guess I have to be the judge of that, although I do not like to censor. I believe the following guideline is fair - discussion on the band's music is fine; debate, constructive criticism, even the airing of gripes or controversial opinions is also fine, so long as it is carried out in a civil and adult manner and meant with the best of intentions. However, name calling, foul language, abuse at other individuals or anything malicious is not acceptable. As I've stated before, if anything corruptive DOES appear before I have chance do remove it, it would be in everybody's interest to ignore it and not allow these people to lower the tone of our forum. Let's beat them, not join them...

Looking back at some of the comments regarding Ben's playing. There's no doubt that Ben was going to bring something different to the band's sound and I for one thought that it was a brilliant link up. However I may be wrong but I feel Ben has been trying to adapt too much and has lost a wee bit of his own dynamic style. I hope he has'nt felt pressured to try to follow a format that does'nt suit him.Personally I would prefer Ben and Andy and Bob and Ray to get away from the shuffling boogie groove and experiment more and Ben would be the best exponent of this. Who thinx what ??? Billy

Gary C - on other forums (including the official one at wishboneash.com) there is a system where users have to register their name and email address before posting - is there any chance of such a system here? I'm not suggesting that the message board become an exclusive 'club', but it would possibly help to keep the morons out

OK folks, it has been brought to our attention that someone with a strange sense of humour (actually, not even that since it is not even funny!)is posting comments here using other peoples names/e-mails. We have no problem with people posting under nicknames or other such monikers should they wish to protect their identity (some of these names are actually quite clever), so long as the content and nature of the post is in keeping with the general spirit of this forum. We will not, however, accept people using other contributors names and e-mails to air their mindless and abusive ramblings. As such a
