Thanks, Alan...I do agree that LD2 has loads more energy than LD1. I would love to see LD2 on Cd someday but I think a box set of remixed LD1 shows (with lots of previously unreleased material, of course) is sorely needed right now. I know this was already discussed on this list but I just know it would spark a lot of interest from us and fans who have long since lost track of the band. Look at how the Led Zeppelin DVD/CD sets are selling here in the States! Now, i'm not comparing Zep's popularity to Ash's but, surely there's some incentive in there somewhere. Andy? Martin?, MCA (in whatever form you exist in now)?

I agree with Brian who said that Live Dates was a slightly disappointing album. In my opinion Live Dates 2 was superior to its predecessor.

Billy makes some valid points, I think. I am willing to bet that everyone on this forum has made life and career choices that later came back to revisit them in one way or another. Ash was only guilty of consistently trying to move things ahead. For a while, that was in vogue. Later it got to be too challenging for the mainstream listeners out there. With respect to Floyd, they've made the same album at least three times in their career. Wishbone never did that, although many fans thought they should have, I guess. There will NEVER be a more important guitar band than WA. For those that think that era is gone, you haven't gone to see the current lineup. They still know how to play and make two guitars/bass/drums sound like a freight train comin' at ya and hit ya just as hard....if you're listening.

Come on name not given....Just because you are feeling nostalgic about the band and what might have been doesn't mean you should be anonymous.Like most bands Wishbone have had to deal with growing up together and all the pressures that go with being in the limelight.I agree that Wishbone have the right to be "up there"with the best of British bands from the 70's but they floundered at a time when there was so much on offer from all sorts of great bands..a very creative time which moved so quickly. The good thing is that WE know that the Wishbone legacy is still with us. I don't go along with the poor fill in albums theory. Wishbone shifted a bit but never produced a "fill in album". Remember the slating that Wishbone 4 got? That album is a classic but at the time it was not what was expected so was dis'd by the music press who were miffed by Wishbone's apparent snubbing of them at that time..all history now but at the time was very relevant.Martin Turner and Andy Powell are very creative and in my opinion should STILL be working together but if Lennon and McCartney couldn't get it together then maybe we should appreciate that similar reasons prevent them working together. We know that if Lennon and McCartney had actually buried the hatchet and persuaded the other Beatles to reform then incredible stuff would have happened...same would be true of Wishbone I'm sure.I am keen to see Martin get it together in some form but am so pleased with the way that the current Wishbone Ash are going. I would be the first to say that a mark 1 or mark 2 reunion would be brilliant but maybe the chance has gone for ever considering the 25yr and 30 yr anniversaries have been and gone and those landmarks were not enough to get the band enthused even though the payday would have been considerable.

Enough said,I'm tired and need to get to bed. Goodnight Billy

It’s so sad thinking about Wishbone Ash. You know....What went wrong...How it could have been...Martin Turner still fronting the band etc....Steve Upton’s heavy drum fills, Ted & Laurie doodling ....Not forgetting Andy. A major force in British music I think. What the fxxk went wrong? The band should have been as big as Pink Floyd and more. Bad decisions, poor ‘fill in albums’. Wishbone Ash would have been a household name world-wide. Last word.....The current band is a tribute band going out as Wishbone Ash.....Come on Martin, get busy again and bring back the heavy players!

They did not play 'Sometime World' on that tour, in fact they rarely played it live in those days. I believe it's on the BBC COncert at the Paris Theatre, which turned out to be Ted's last gig before absconding to Peru with 'Wishbone Ass'.

I'm going to get a lot of flak for this, I'm sure but... I think Live Dates could've been better. Not performance-wise but mix-wise. My CD version just doesn't have the spark that I've heard on other recordings from this time. It just doesn't capture the magical connection between band and audience that a live album should. Mind you, it might just be the way they mixed it and edited out much of the in-between song patter except for the intros to "Lady Whiskey" and "R'N'R Widow". I'm probably the only one that feels this way but... Does anyone remember them playing "Sometime World" on that tour? I would've loved for that song to have been included...

The say everybody knows where they were when JFK was shot. Well I know where I was when Live Dates 1 came out. McKilroys in Swindon. Just spent time looking at the cover, still today I consider it one of the best of its kind, before asking for it to be played in a booth (god - that ages me). By the way the drunken nut case that shouts out in a high pitch on Live Dates, sat next to me at the Reading gig. Seem to attract them. At the Ally Pally gig up at the front, another drunk was shouting for Jailbait every other minute, and only after threats did he shut up. Thank god we fans have all aged a little bit !.

I was at the Portsmouth Guildhall show - I tell my kids that I can hear myself clapping at the end of 'Baby What You Want . .'. It was a great show, but I think the band were a bit upset at first, because the headbangers charged the stage from the very first number, but the band wanted them (I mean us!) to sit down. I seem to remember we had 3 encores also. After the show, I managed to see the inside of the mobile studio and the engineer played some of 'King Will Come' for us. Apparently, the band felt it was not one of their best shows; the roadies were very interested in our opinions; to me this showed how serious WA were/are about putting on great shows and delivering for their fans. Andy came along shortly after the show, followed by Martin (obliging girls with kisses), then they went about the serious business of listening to the tapes, right there in the parking lot. 'Live Dates' is one of the best live albums ever made, they worked hard for it and it captured the band at a magical time.
Were any of you out there for the Ash gigs that were recorded for Live Dates 1. Went to the Reading Uni gig, and can remember sitting outside on the grass during the soundcheck, and hearing Martins "Handy" bass solo pounding out. As to the gig, Ash just played and played, came on at around 9 and were still playing at 12. Even came back on when the lights went on to play a third encore. Did they play as long at the other recorded gigs?. Great days, as they are now, with Ash still rocking.

The current incarnation is also fantastic and they completely live up to the magnificent Wishbone Legacy. Long may they rock!

Something to say this time. Caught Ash several times on the New England Tour - Can't remember Supercharge, but hey I am 47. Yes, I agree Ash were up there with the best at the time of the Ally Pally gig, best bib and tucker, Ted wearing a bright flowery shirt if I remember correctly. In terms of support bands, Home and Renaissance were my all time favs, although slightly confused when they played the whole set from the Alchemist when in support of Ash, the concept album however now remains a well played CD in my collection.

Remember The Ash at ALLY PALLY in AUGUST & Dec 73 Truly magnificent, best band in World at the time, great support acts especially Vinegar Joe with Elkie Brooks & a young Robert Palmer, but the best Ash support band i ever saw was Supercharge ( Alby Donnelly) on the WA UK tour around 77?. Robert Mutt Lange(Shania Twains husband) was their manager/producer/songwriter) at the time, great songs. They even did a 'send up' version of Blowin Free.

Best Ash Gig?.

For me the Ally Pally Christmas gig in the early 70s - one of Teds last. Played two great sets. From memory the gig was filmed by a crew from France. Does anyone out there know of any film made?.

Best CD/Record

Bootleg of BBC in Concert from the Paris. Ted Turner using a voice box on Jailbait is still today, my fav ever track, with Matins heavy bass line in support was amazing. The only time I heard the box being used. Never saw in on countless times I saw Ash in the early days.

The Ferry doesn't sound like it would be the best gig acoustically but nostalgically Imust be there as I've travelled on the ferry so many times.I posted to you on the .com site Les so no need to reply there as I've just read your posting here.Sheffield Billy gives another point of view so it's a question of go see for myself. If I could only get to 1 gig then i would opt for a venue i know to be good but i'm gonna catch at least 3 gigs this time round so it won't matter that much[sorry bobby I know how sore this point is with you]The great escape in Paisley..HA HA.I remember when there were power strikes and being terrified when the lights went out in the Normandy hotel in Renfrew and the local gang known affectionately as the REMO used the occasion to whip[yes whip] and knife and beat up as many people as they could in the dark...very scarey!!!! Just the gig for Wishbone Ash LOL Hopefully the booking agent is going to get at least 1 more gig sorted for Scotland as there are a few days before the gig at the Limelight Crewe on the 13th.Cheers Billy

Didn't feel the "squeeze" at all. Then again, maybeI'm "big" enough not to feel the squeeze. (When I wasborn, the midwife said "he's just as wide as he is tall".All this according to my dear mom).

This weekend I will be going to see Westlife at the Birmingham NEC (eat your heart out Fat Drummer, Billy Auld etc J). I will be taking my wife and two daughters and by the time you do taxi duty to and from the NEC, you might as well stay! My kids have said they would like to return the favour and go and see W/Ash later in the year with me. All was going swimmingly until my wife commented that she had to stand for a few hours at the last W/Ash concert she attended, at which point the kids fainted. After they came round they’ve been grumbling about standing since. As we know the kids today don’t know they’re born and are used to sitting down at the big venues – but as they have pointed out to me, I don’t stand in front of the stereo at home when I play W/Ash CD’s. Can anyone indicate which of the venues on the W/Ash Autumn tour are seated venues – so I book up quickly before the kids change their minds?

Crikey Les, "The usual Lochgelly gig" ... I'm just waiting for any gig.
You better hope WA are not playing Renfrew Ferry. I saw Steve Harley there last week and it must be one of the worst venues ever. It's basically a big glass dome with little or no atmosphere. I'm hoping for the usual Lochgelly gig which is a perfect venue to appreciate WA.

I think "Say Goodbye"is one of my favourite songs(unfashionable album I know!).The feeling is intense loneliness and 'blues.Martin's vocals are suitably apt,as is the piercing guitar solo(who's,Laurie's?).

Dee, I know the bit you mean on Half Past Lovin'. Sorry, I forgot to mention the song I was talking about in my last post! It was actually Silver Shoes I was talking about - if you listen to it on headphones, there's something playing the same melody as the guitars and Martin's scat vocal after the chorus - it has a very "fuzzy" sound - my guess is that it's a kazoo!

Mike, Brian, funny you should say that, I've been going through a big "There's The Rub" phase myself lately! Speaking of which, can anybody figure out what the instrument is playing along with the guitar bit after each chorus? It's an high / low octave guitar line rather than a straight twin lead, which Martin scat sings along with (plays out at the end of the song too)and I'm sure there's a kazoo going on there!! Either that, or someone's playing through an amp with a very distressed speaker! You can hear it better on headphones. Can anyone shed any light on this?!

I think Martin has previously said about Locked In that the material he would stand by - it's just the production/band sound that is lacking - I quite agree. The live releases of Rest In Peace and Half Past Loving are regulars in my CD player! Mind you, I'm having a There's The Rub phase at the mo..............

I might be swimming against the tide on this one ..but here goes. Recent postings suggest that Locked In must be the weakest album put out by the band. IMHO whilst it isn’t the strongest, it certainly isn’t the worst – my award goes to Twin Barrels Burning! Locked In was certainly different and moving in different directions, looking for a style – it might not hit the button but it doesn’t miss the target entirely. As it was followed by one of my favourites, New England, I regard it as transitional and not necessarily bad. I accept that some of the vocals are as smooth as a woodworker’s bench but I’ve always regarded this to be a quirky album rather than bad one. I always get the impression that everyone panicked big time when this one came out and thought that it was all over, particularly the band. – and this coloured people’s view permanently and unfairly. It still seems “trendy” to knock it after all these years - come on get the blinkers off!

Marcus G., I like the 2 things you mention, plus Say Goodbye off Locked In. When I record my favorites on CD for friends I always include that song. That's a song I never would've caught on to if it hadn't been for Distillations. There are many many days I take Distillations to work and listen to Discs 2 and 3 rather than grabbing everal others. A sign of my love of Mark II, Brian W.! I was thrilled to get all those unreleased and live songs I hadn't heard before. Of course, that makes the remasters/
reissues, whatever you call them! a bit less exciting to buy but I do buy them anyway, this time for Martin's autograph!

Actually, I thought Distillation was one of the best box sets released by any of my favorite bands. As you may all know by now, I am partial to MKII Wishbone Ash, so all those amazing live tracks made my day. That set cost a pretty penny to import over to the states but Time and Space was worth the price alone(although, no one could know at the time that in a couple years it would be issued on the remastered CD issue anyway!!!)

Sorry if my post was a little misleading. I am not stating that Martin does not consider the music suitable for release on a live WA album, neither has Martin ever voiced such an opinion. What I stated was merely the fact that the material in question did not fit the bill as regards what the record company required on Distillation (you will note little of Locked In made that set either, Marcus!). But..another time, another project, who knows..?

Reading with great interest the postings regarding previously unreleased live material that rumour has it that MT doesn't consider it up to WA's high standards & suitable for release on a live album. Well I really hate to say it but it's got to be better than almost everything on 'Locked In'; excluding the lead solo on 'Started In Heaven' & chorus on RIP ( Now the light has come......).

yes, Mike, I agree - musicians don't always see things from the same perspective as fans or collectors (that's why I was asked to assist in the compilation of Distillation.). However, the German company who put out Distil. had issued the brief to us all that the set had to offer some obscurities yet also present a DEFINITIVE overview of WA's career. All recordings had to represent the band at their very best. For whatever reasons, technical, performance or whatever, it was considered in THAT instance that the LD1 outtakes did not meet the standards required. Of course, in a different context they may be extremely worthy! What about a 2CD set with the full original double album remastered and unedited, plus the best version of each of the "unreleased" tracks added? Of course, I would imagine MCA - not Martin - would be the key to anything happening on that front, and we all know just how much enthusiasm they have shown for releasing the band's back-cat over the years!

yes, but even so gary, martin is coming at it from an artist's point of view and he is a self-confessed perfectionist as far as "live out-takes" are concerned. for example i think he has gone on record as saying some of the stuff on tracks is a bit rough, whereas to us fans they are real gems. perhaps you can use your persuasive powers to convince him that there are plenty of people out there that want to hear this stuff. well, me brian and dave anyway! people go on about wishbone ash not being in the same league as the deep purples but if you put their stuff in the shops it will sell. eventually! i have no doubt that if issued, it would out-sell distillations which turned out to be an expensive compilation with a few token rarities. come on, how about it!!

Mike, Brian, Dave, etc - Martin Turner certainly has all four complete LD1 shows on multi track. They were last played during the compilation of Distillation, when we got them out to see if there were any outtakes worth including. Among the tracks that didnt make the original double LD album were (if my memory is correct) Everybody Needs a Friend, So Many Things to Say, Doctor, plus maybe a couple of others (about 5-6 tracks in all). I seem to recall Martin's opinion at that time (circa 1996) being that the remaining tracks were not that great and it was easy to see why they were left off the album (hence why there were no previously unreleased live Mk.1 recordings on Distillation).

1973 - 2003 Live Dates 30th anniversary. Surely some form of commemorative releae is in order? What about the original unedited 2LP remastered by MT, with maybe some additional unreleased tracks added from the four gigs. I think Mike's idea of a complete record of all four complete shows is a bit pie in the sky (though I'd buy it!) - Live Dates simply doesnt have the same legendary value as Made in Japan (commercially), great as it maybe to us. Does ne1 know if the four shows even still exist on tape? Who would be the key, Mr Powell presumably?

Mike, that is a fantastic idea!!! A 4-CD set of the complete shows that were recorded for Live Dates with lavish packaging, faithful to original LP release. Brilliant!!! I'm sure either MCA (in whatever conglomerate they're part of now) or Martin Turner have the master tapes... and as for in-between song chatter, I'm all for it because it adds to the listening experience and makes it different than just hearing the album versions.

About Live Dates CD versions:

As I live close Russia I've grown to dislike censorship. Be it "sound quality censorship" or "small talk censorship". The comment "We made it" at the beginning of the original album is IMHO an itegral part of the album. It shouldn't be removed. Thus the ultimate CD version of Live Dates is still to be published.

Anyway, if I had to choose between the MCA release and the BGO release I'd go for the BGO version.

I agree with Mike Spooner that the BGO remastered version has better sound quality, but the sad truth is that it is more or less an edited version. a lot of the small talk is removed in order to fit the double LP on a single CD.

Hi there, Mr brave No Name Given! In response to your comments: firstly, it is a pity you put your point across in a way which is really a little abusive in my opinion, but still: I don't mind being called a sad b*****, I often call myself that anyway, even though I am extremely happy with life at the moment, thank you! I really don't mind about whether bands are 18 or 80 (after all, WA were an up-and-coming band once upon a time!), as long as they provide great music and entertainment - my saying is that any music done well is worthy of praise. And that is precisely why there are many followers of Wishbone Ash still. I challenge you to go and see one of their gigs, and come back with the same opinion. The band are on fire and have a great new album out - when I go to a WA gig I'll know I'll get total value for money and a great time. All the people I've taken with me in the last couple of years (old fans and young kids alike) have been united in their praise for the guys. You said that the band WERE great once - I can assure you they still ARE. Greatness is measured by ability, charisma and standing the test of time - see you at the next Tchaichovsky gig?

Just strikes me as odd. a name like that and two very distinctive guitars in the V and Thunderbird. I note that their other guitarist favours an SG. I saw Laurie play an SG sometimes but did Ted ever play one?

...and here we have the species 'Fashionandum Keepupanus'.
The main thing to look out for with this creature is the blind devotion to the 'next big thing'. They are unable to grasp that like fine whiskeys, certain things age well. Although they deny any interest in the 'old days' they still manage to go onto message boards slagging off other creatures that do have an interest in the past, the present and the future.
This creature was once thought to be dangerous, but is in reality too laughable to be of any concern.
Treat with contempt.

Move on you sad lot and check out the new bands - life does go on even though Ash were great .... once and had their place.

(no good 4 me, need a clear flight path from stage!) anyway, i personally think best opener since maybe 'you see red', or even the quite brilliant, 'baby come in from the rain', during the 1999 tour. - sheffield billy 25/4/03.

Rich, I agree with you about Phil Lynott. He also had that soulful voice and his bassplaying is definitely underrated. Another bassist that is always omitted is Neil Murray. He was in the early (and best) lineups of Whitesnake. Come to think of it, they also had a good few twin leads. But anyway, Murray had many bubbling basslines that always sounded so unorthodox beneath those bluesy tunes. He plays with his fingers which is very different from Martin Turner's plectrum style. But check out the "Trouble" album album especially for some Murray's great style.

Hi guys!
I agree Rich & Brian about the Southern Rock bands you mention - excellent stuff! Molly Hatchet had their moments, too - "Fall of the Peacemakers" springs to mind. Also, there's a band that's been going for more than 25 years now, called Riot - anybody failiar with them? The had a string of great albums in the late 70s, such as "Narita", "Rock City" and "Fire Down Under". They're still going, in a slightly heavier vein, and the majority of their songs have twin-guitar riffs and sometimes entire solos, often played at breakneck pace!
Has anyone heard the Flyin' Ryan Brothers? Have heard good things, but haven't heard anything by them.
Dee - you're right, MT is a very uniques bassist, and I'm struggling to think of anyone similar to recommend, especially in terms of how Martin's playing locks in (no pun intended!)with the guitar harmonies. Phil Lynott did a few interesting counter-rhythm things in places, and IMHO was a very underrated bassist. MT's sound is very gutsy and upfront - the only others I can think of along similar lines (although they all sound very different) are John Entwistle (the Who)and maybe Lemmy! I saw John Enwistle play a 15 minute bass solo at a gig in 2000, and the crowd went nuts all the way through it! Have you heard King's X? They're a power trio, and the bass is fairly upfront with them. Their sound is totally unique, with amazing vocal harmonies - "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" is a good album by them.

Rich D, other bands who have used the dual lead guitar harmonies as part of their sound are the Allman Brothers, Stillwater, & Point Blank. I can think of songs that featured guitar harmonies like WA and it always stands out when I hear it, but I can't think of any off the top of my head; isn't that funny? Yes, Keep Pushin' by REO is one of them. Boys are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy. But what about bands with bass players like Martin Turner? I haven't come across any. Maybe Uriah Heep in the days of Gary Thain ??? I'm not saying there aren't great bass players out there, just that Martin's style is very unique. Any recommendations for me?

Matty - yep, I remember reading about the Eagles connection and they certainly did some great stuff with the twin guitar format. So did Maiden for that matter. Have you heard very early judas Priest, e.g. "Rocka Rolla" ? I think I can detect a slight WA influence on some of their stuff, but then I'm biased! It's more in the riffs than that I notice it, as there aren't many actual guitar harmonies. Another metal band that had LOADS of twin guitar stuff was Stryper - I only heard them quite recently, but there are loads of twin riffs and solos. Much heavier than I thought they would be in places, too. Bit like Queen in the vocal dept, with extreme harmony parts stacked on there!
Bob - not laughing about 10cc, I can believe it! They were big on harmonies of every kind, e.g. "I'm Not In Love"!
One track that blew me away wwhen I first heard it wass "And Your Bird Can Sing" by the Beatles, from the "Revolver" album - this was in about 1966, and there are amazing harmonies all over it! Who woulda thunk it!?!

The Iron Maiden boys often refer to WA as a major influence (and Steve Harris the bassist about MT too) plus - didn't the Eagles overhear WA recording 'There's the rub' in Miami in 1974 and expanded the twin guitar sound for Hotel California...?

Dee, know what you mean about the "FPN" stuff - love all the tracks you mention! The harmonies on "Surface to Air" are amazing - the way they build up one by one in layers is sublime! Also on "Midnight Dancer" - you can even hear the guys singing the chorus harmonies in sequence on the fade-out of the song. Just getting into "New England", so will check out the tracks you mention in more depth! What really strikes me about this era is how fluid everything seems to be - there are lots of guitar fills between the vocals, and even some of the rhythm parts have plenty of variety, and yet when you hear live versions of stuff from this era, it's reproduced very precisely - the old "tight but loose" idea! Agree with you about Steve Upton, too! One of the most under-rated drummers ever. I remember playing the title track of "FPN" to a friend who is a monster drummer, former drum teacher, very into "drummer's drummers", and he commented on how good (and difficult to play!) the middle section of the song sounded. BTW,do you (or anyone else posting on here) like any other twin guitar bands? (I'm not suggesting comparing them in the sense of who does it best, as it's just personal taste). Obviously Thin Lizzy are a great example, but I've heard some great twin-guitar tracks from unexpected sources - for example, REO Speedwagon! Just heard a track by them called "Keep Pushin'" which has some very cool harmonies. Does anyone else have any recommendations?

Rich D, "Baby the Angels are Here" is my favorite song off "No Smoke", it just strikes me as different, heavy in a way, and "Haunting Me" is one of my favorites and a song I can really relate to! I also really like "New Rising Star", "Living Proof", "Lifeline" and "Firesign". On "FPN" I think the bass really stands out on "FPN" and in particular "714" and "Surface to Air" which are also favorites. What, no "New England"? That whole album features what you call "very prominent bass riffs" and I think it's also Steve Upton's time to shine, too. "You Rescue Me" is my absolute favorite, extremely rich and dreamy, with beautiful tones coming from MT's bass and sensual vocals/lyrics. And "Lonely Island" will blow the speakers out in your car! Beautiful balance of light, sweet guitar and deep, "pounding surf" type bass. Another favorite and a great example of why I love WA so much.

There's a funny post on their official website where a user bemoans the fact that upon searching for 'Ash' he gets loads of 'Wishbone Ash' links..!

Anyway, this band have a guitarist (Tim Wheeler) who users a Flying V and a bassist that uses a Thunderbird - much loved, of course, by Martin.

I don't know ANY band that has this combination - yet alone a group called Ash. Are they having a laugh, are they secret fans or is it just a weird coincidence?

Hi gang
haven't posted for a while but have been "lurking"! Just wondered if anyone is going to the Burnley Blues Festival this weekend. I'm playing there with the Maddy Leigh Blues Band on the Saturday night, and am always more than happy to have a chat about the Ash, possibly for hours on end! Also, if anyone likes Monty Python / Goon Show style humour, I've got a comedy CD coming out in May, which also features a couple of (serious) music tracks which have bags of twin-lead stuff on them (in a heavier vein than WA, but influenced by them nonetheless). Sorry for all this shameless plugging, but it's an independent release (i.e. just me!)and I'm promoting it by word of mouth for the most part. Check out www.richdavenport.co.uk if yer interested!
On the Ash front have been listening to "No Smoke..." and "Just Testing" recently - Martin has a couple of crackers on these IMHO, namely "Haunting Me" and "Baby The Angels Are Near". The band seemed to have a few songs (on "Front Page News" too) which feature very prominent bass riffs with the guitars filling in the gaps, which I reckon sound great, very atmospheric - what do you guys reckon?

Matty, what about this lot:
Time Was (full version), Phoenix (full version including impromptu messing about in the audience from a Mr Andrew Powell), Livin' Proof, Blowin' Free, Jailbait, Throw Down the Sword, Warrior, Standing in the Rain, Underground, Bad Weather Blues, The King Will Come, plus several tracks from Bona Fide and one from Illuminations (I forget which, but they were all stormers)

Matt, they played "Jailbait" and "King Will come" when I last saw them in March. Both sounded wonderful...

Don't worry Matt, plenty of faves & some excellent new tracks too. 'King Will Come' was played at last gig, I think. 'Time Was' full version is definitely in. Your mates will not be disappointed!

I'm dragging some mates to the Ash gig in London next week who haven't seen them for years.

Is it true they're not playing The king will come, Sometime World or Jailbait....?

What am I gonna tell 'em?!

Gary - Sorry to put you on the defensive somewhat; I appreciate all that you do for the fans. I love the site, it's part of my daily ritual. My point was that the Q&A has been a bit of an empty tease of late, that's all. As for the lack of questions, I think you might find that the dialogue would be self-perpetuating if the Q&A section was updated more frequently. I'm pretty sure that the questions that I've submitted have not already been covered in the past and I certainly hope I've not blown my chance of getting them answered one day!!
I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. God bless Martin and his family, I hope all the troubles are over soon.

Ditto for me, Gary...well said. On another note, I'm glad to hear the band is still smokin' along in the U.K. tour. Their NY show was incredible and this band can rock. Enjoy everyone!

... And another stonker of a gig at Frome last night (for more fan reports, see .com site forum). Afterwards the band were as usual very friendly & approachable. My bro' has seen many top bands over the years, says he would recommend WA live to anyone, & his 17 year old daughter was really into it (her first gig).
Check 'em out, any one who has any interest in WA should see at least one gig if they can this tour.

Just wanted to say what a fantastic gig, Gloucester, 11th April.

Guys you were brilliant........took my lady friend who had never been to a 'decent' rock live act before...she loved every damn minute of it......danced through every number...even though she didn't know half the songs.

We felt like ageing rockers, but we didn't care, we all were.....no cussing no blinding, like these new bands, just sheer classy music from beginning to end. Andy she had never heard playing like that........come back soon......you made an old sod very happy indeed...just keep rollin' away the years.

Many thanks,

Phil Davies & Chris Horsley-Bovey.

About the Just Testing and No Smoke outtakes, fans at Ashcon 2002 were lucky enough to hear snippets of a few of the songs. They are: Is Justice Done, Hear the Bells Chime, Out on a Limb, Football and Boxing, Sheriff of Sherwood, Haunted House, Too Much Monkey Business (Live), and The Spontaneous Jam. I was extremely excited to hear these songs and can't wait to hear what comes of these tapes. I love that era of the band. As for the Q&A, if you subscribe to the e-newsletter you'll get the answers when they come out, that way you won't be checking the Q&A on the web site all the time. Thanks to Gary for providing us with the feedback forum. Before this I was driving the Grand Funk list nuts talking about Wishbone Ash and Martin!

Well said, Gary. Artists are not there just to churn out music for their fans and are allowed to have a real life as well.

I would like to comment on the remarks regarding the Q&As. Firstly, YES, you are all right. The Q&A page needs a long overdue update. I will raise my hand and take the blame for not uploading the last batch of questions which Brian W mentions. My oversight, and one which I will see about rectifying ASAP. Gordon, as for me phoning Martin once a month with 20 questions, I have this to say. Firstly, I maintain regular contact with MT by both e-mail and phone. Secondly, I'd love to actually RECEIVE 20 questions a month (and better still, questions which dont go over ground already covered elsewhere on the site!!). On last talking to Martin, he did apologise sincerely for not getting around to the outstanding Q&As before now. Those of you who keep in touch with this board on a regular basis will have read Martin's message of a few months ago, detailing the personal trials he is presently experiencing, specifically concerning his brother Kim's ill health. Because I respect the fact that right now Martin's priority is with his family at this difficult time, I deliberately have not "hassled" him into pulling his finger out on the Q&A front. I know him well enough to realise he will honour his promise to answer them as and when. That is good enough for me, if it isn't good enough for some of his fans, then I do apologise sincerely. Gordon - we are all well aware of Andy's efforts - his talent and dedication speaks for itself and is not in any way being brought into disrepute here. Rich - as for Martin "icing out" his ardent fans, I am sure those who have spoken to him at recent gigs will disagree with you and would have found him quite approachable. Isn't it a little unfair to make such statements based on assumption rather than knowledge? I don't want to get into tit-for-tat on this one, but with Martin out of the country at the moment, I guess someone needs to attempt to put this all into perspective. What I am trying to say is that life can be complex for us all at times and, as important as both the legacy and continuation of WA may be, I am sure most will agree that, at times, we all have more pressing issues to deal with.

Mike, Andy announced at several gigs in Germany and the US earlier this year, that tapes had been found containing outtakes and other goodies from the 1979/80 Just Testing sessions (Looking for a Reason, is reportedly among them). He plans on releasing them later this year. I, for one, am extremely excited about this release because this album is one of my faves. I wonder if Martin Turner will be involved since it appears to be in Andy Powell's posession. Keeping my fingers crossed...

yes, it's a pity about the q&a but gordon never said the rest of the site was rubbish, he just said he's not going to check the q&a any more. i'd go along with him on that - if someone says there are going to be updates soon then you naturally check for them and feel disappointed when they don't materialise!

I'm not alleging any false advertising and I completely agree that MT owes us nothing. However, a little morsel from time to time would be nice.

Gordon and Rich T., You guys are absolutely entitled to your opinions but...I strongly disagree. I do not feel Martin Turner owes us anything. The fact that he endorses this site and only infrequently particpates or contributes is his own business. It does not mean that there's false advertising going on here. Many artist endorse a site without actually participating. Of course, I would love to interact with one of my all-time heroes but if he cannot or will not for whatever reason, than it certainly does not warrant any criticsm from me. MT had answered several of my Q&A's via e-mail several months back but they have not yet been uploaded onto the website. So any contribution by MT should be treated as a bonus.

I do have a question for Martin: What is your perspective of the recently-announced future release of the lost Just Testing tapes? Cheers!

Absolutely right, Gordon. Every now and then Gary C promises a new set of Q&A, but nothing new has appeared for a year, I guess. Pity that Martin seems to ice out his ardent fans the world over, I think we don't deserve it, the proof of which is our presence here!

I'm giving up checking the Q&A section of this site. MT might endorse the site, which is good to know, but he does nothing for it. I'm sick of reading the current Q&A - it has to be 6 months old! I love Martin's Wishbone legacy as much as the next person, but if you're going to be associated with a site like this and advertise some form of connection with your fan base, you should actually do something. Gary could call him once a month and fire off 20 questions, type it up and 'bingo'.
I'm not taking sides in any percieved Andy versus Martin dispute, but let's face it, Andy is the one that's out there busting his butt, criss-crossing various countries and putting on kick-ass concerts in order to (among other things) keep the Wishbone legacy and catalog alive.
