Brian, your observations about Genesis & ELP are spot on - at least the
Heep had b....cks! Matty, sorry mate - we've still got the Ash to keep
us together. Listen to the opening track off either of Heep's first two
LP's after a gap of many years; to hear them again was more than
nostalgia - sounded as fresh as it was then. And I'm sure Freddy Mercury
must have taken in at least one Heep gig! I still can't get over wasted
lives such as David Byron's, it's just so sad.

Uriah Heep were/are the greatest band to walk onto a stage (despite
never being critics' darlings). Wishbone Ash come very close and so do
Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and Free. Genesis having any soul would be news
to me. I've always lumped Genesis and ELP into the same category of
boring and pompous fodder. I don't think UH should ever be lumped in
with that lot.

When I woz a kid at school, me and my friends liked bands such as Ash,
Led Zep, Journey, Genesis, Who but lampooned perfectly successful bands
such as Uriah Heep and ELP ('overblown pompous twaddle) as the former
list had 'soul' (whatever that means) and the latter didn't.

Well I WAS going to mention Montrose as a classic debut album, but
seeing as David beat me to it... what about The Clash; Born To Run,(The

Live Dates 2 - couldn't agree more. Especially the version with the
bonus LP. My favourites are Living Proof (the interplay between the two
lead guitars and the bass is amazing) and Goodbye Baby Hello Friend
which is much better than the Front Page News recording. You were lucky

And how about In the court of the Crimson King? Now, for me this was
something really revolutionary! I remember when I first heard it I asked
myself if it was still rock. Of less popular bands Steamhammer comes to
my mind, although here I'd hesitate whether not to yield the palm to
their third (?) album "Mountains". Yrt another one that comes to my mind
is Dutch band Focus. I guess we could continue this list on and on, but
there's one thing in common: all those astounding and most important
debuts took place in the late 60's or early 70's. Sheer coincidence?

Good topic. In general I think there are a lot of debut albums that are
fantastic. Bands have all this stored creative energy and it gets
recorded, life changes, and the band goes to crap! But not always! For
many it's just the spark. I remember a few as they actually came out and
how we all listened to them, if not when they came out then shortly
thereafter - Aerosmith self-titled (featuring Dream On)(1973), Bad
Company (1974), Van Halen (1978), and AC/DC High Voltage (1976) (but the
big one was Highway to Hell). I know all these albums shook things up
and everybody I hung out with was listening to these. It's a little
different for me to speak of albums that came out and I was unaware of
them, but the Allman Brothers self-titled (1969) and Captain Beyond
self-titled (1972) are both way out as compared to what else was
happening at the time in music.

Well, the first Doors album was pretty revolutionary, and had Light My

Hi All....An interesting thread this one. I am going down memory lane
now and recalling a memorable hitchhiking holiday in 1972 with my mate
Merv who incidentally introduced me to Wishbone ash, family,Led Zep Rory
etc.,...Love him to bits. Anyway we set off from Scotland and hitched to
Scarborough, found a camp site and set off to town. We just knew we were
going to have a great time when we found a tenner on the road. We caught
a bus and soon arrived in in the town centre as the sun was setting.
Eyes wide open,we spotted a banner saying "ROXY MUSIC HERE TONIGHT"
WOW!!!! This was the band who were racing up the charts with Virginia
Plain,we couldn't miss this! It turns out the club they were playing was
quite small, holding only a couple of hundred people at best so we duly
joined the queue and scraped in by the skin of our teeth. The band
announced that this would probably be the last time they would play such
a small venue and then proceeded to blow everyone away by playing the
whole of their debut album "ROXY MUSIC" Bare in mind that the early ROXY
were a brilliant innovative progressive band albeit glam and glitzy. So
I am plumping for Roxy's first album as it holds great memories for me.
I'm now going to have to go get it as I have not got it on cd.
Incidentally the band joined everyone later wearing jeans and t shirts
and getting up to dance and sitting at the bar chatting with us,a real
one off experience....Oh to be 16 and wreckless again!!!

Apologies if this has been covered before.
I notice in the news section that a DVD is being released in October
covering gigs 'from 2002'. Has the DVD been released from this year's

I spent a considerable amount of time, tired and emotional, pushing my

Failing this, I'll have to throw some eggs at David Blaine.

Just a note to say thank you to Dr. John for his nice review of the new
Blue Law Double Live CD on his site at www.usash.com
I know that Blue Law is but a tiny branch on the Wishbone family tree,
but the "Good Doctor" has been very supportive and encouraging over the
years.
A lot of folks have emailed me with reports of how well the US Wishbone
tour is going. It really seems that this line-up has hit it's stride,
and could open more people's eyes to the band's music, past and present.
I have usually found that once someone is exposed to WA music, they
become converts. A guitar player I recently turned on to Ash said that
they sort of reminded him of a "British Grateful Dead", because they are
not afraid to experiment, or to do extended jams. The first song on
Argus is nearly ten minutes long, and it was their biggest success! Like
the Dead, they certainly don't worry about pandering to commercial
considerations, and have a loyal cult following. I have found that many
Deadheads are now discovering WA, and I think there is a lot of
potential growth there for the fan base of WA. It would be great to see
people discovering for the first time music that is 20-30 years old, but
still sounds fresh.

Sorrel, yes one of the greats. It is a song that perfectly demonstrates
a point I made some time back about Martin's playing and how underrated
he is on bass. His bass lines were more like themes unto themselves and
they drove the songs melodically and rhythmically. Lady Jay, as Rich
points out, is another Martin "classic". Lorelei and Outward Bound come
to mind as well.

to play Lady Jay and Sorrel hundreds times a day, perhaps it helped me

Rich, I can relate to much of what you said. Yes, it IS cool that
younger folks can pick up on Ash along with us old fogies! The gig in
Shirley, MA the other night was great..place was packed and the band was
quite sharp despite Ray's broken arm and massive fatigue from the road.
Andy and I chatted for a bit before the show- it was good to see him
again, it had been months since we spoke together in person. I gotta
say, he pulled out some riffs that stunned me..he still can burn up the
fretboard but with taste and style people like me only dream of having.
Ben and Bob were spot-on as usual. In a phrase, this band still rocks
and rocks well. One of the signs you're getting older? Seeing folks at
an Ash show with King Crimson and Gentle Giant t-shirts on and being the
only one that recognizes the artwork is from their album covers. A point
about Steve: I didn't get to know him as well as Andy and Martin during
the time they lived in the USA ('76-'77) but Steve always left me with
the impression he very much knew what was going on in front of the scene
AND behind the scenes. I think he felt comfortable in his role as the
"anchor" of the band, in more ways than rhythmically. He was a practical
man, to my mind, and I think the time came that he grew tired of the
"battle" with the business of the band, etc. I loved his playing as I
think all of us did (do)and his contribution to the band will never be
diminished by anyone. That said, Ray is playing better now more than
ever before and he is an excellent choice for where they are now in
2003.

Fred, Rainer - good point. About the hate-messages and living in the
past... well, at least some of us here are past our prime and with the
passing of time are getting more sentimental. Our young days coincided
with the best times for WA mark I or II and the happier those days were
for each of us personally the more we tend to glorify them and
everything that in our mind is united with them and brings back sweet
mamories . In a very similar way we tend to diminish or disregard
everything that is now, if our present day is not so happy (whateevr the
reason for this may be). This applies also to our perception of past and
current WA, their music and line ups. Soured people just can't see too
much posistive aspects around them (I know it only too well, in many
ways I'm one of them). But having said that we should always try to
differentiate between grumbling and constructive criticism. The latter
seems to be less frequent on this page than the former, regarding WA
present accomplishments. Now, as far as Steve is concerned - for some
artists beeing in a band for such a long time is like serving the time
behind bars and causes some kind of discomfort, especially when the band
is dominated by one or two members, as was/is the case of WA. It was
Andy and Martin who always played first fiddle - no doubt about that -
so maybe he had enough one day? Or he simply decided to retire, just
like Jon Lord of Purple did? Whatever the reason we can only be grateful
for his contribution and stop seeking for some "double-bottom" where it
does not exist. One last remark - isn't it just great that WA music can
get together people like Gary S, who is 20, and me, now in my late 40's?
Keep on rocking, dinosaurs!

Caught last night's show in Philadelphia (my home town!)and WA were
absolutely on fire! This is the stongest lineup on album and on stage
since 1980. The North Star is a smallish bar but the place was packed to
the rafters. The setlists were strong and was divided by a 20 minute
intermission: Mountainside/Warrior/The King Will Come/Throw Down the
Sword/Faith, Hope and Love/Underground/Jailbait/Intermission/You See
Red/Almighty Blues/Living Proof/Sometime World/Phoenix/Encores:Ballad of

About Steve Upton's contributions:
He wrote the lyrics to Leaf and Stream and also wrote the lyrics (all or
parts of them) to some Mark II era songs. The title song of Front Page
News is one of them as far I can remember. Anyone with a better memory
or with a suitable newspaper clip at hand?
The problem is that so many of the songs where Steve collaborated are
marked "written by Wishbone Ash" on the LPs/CDs. You got to find some
other source of information to find out more.
----------
One more thing:
I've got to comment on the "hate-messages" appearing here every now and
then. I get the impression that these "collaborators" are from UK. I
live in Finland and have a hard time understanding your attitude.
You have the chance to see the current band but some of you just keep

contribution was Rock and Roll Widow, did he write any more stuff later
on? He and Martin seemed to be as tight as Bill and Charlie were in the

soul rather than just show their technical skills, most of the ones who
are still touring seem to come from that era, any suggestions for an

Just stumbled across this site, and it has triggered mixed feelings,
Wishbone, especially that twin lead set up were a major influence on my
music, I saw them several times in the earlyish days, Caird Hall in
Dundee, Fairfield Hall Croydon, where I had to beg the ticket office to
let us have the royal box as all the other seats were sold out! and
finally at Wembley on Halloween must have been 77 ish. The new album was
Front Page News. In fact I've just been listening to a tape of the radio
broadcast that Capital Radio did of that gig. It bought back many happy
memories of seeing a band who crafted their songs so carefully and were
every bit as good live . I dont know what they sound like now but for me

Hi Everyone,
How many fans know the true about Steve Upton's departure? Go
on...Guess. Not many!
Andy is a great guitarist...But he has Cuckooed all of the dedicated
feeling, musical contributing members out of the band. We are all living
in the bands winter years.
Look at what happened to poor ol’ Steve Upton. Jesus Christ, he was by
far the best drummer the band has ever known. Talk about Mr 'Drum Fill'.
The guy was really on it...As the Americans might say..."Get it on".
What do they call it in business? Constructive dismissal. In other
words, make somebody's life hell until they leave.
Andy, bless his playin', bless him for keeping the bands soul
alive...And bless him for bolstering his pension!
P.S. What did Steve Upton get for all those years of service?

Mike Tarling, I just noticed a question you posted back in July
regarding Home's "Green-Eyed Fairy" single (CBS, 1974). I'm glad to have
it as its a decent-enough song but, as with many other US singles of the
time, it has the same song on the B-side but in "mono". I'd still love
to get my hands on the UK version that has the different B-side.
While I have no gold records to my credit, I have played thousands of
gigs myself, and had many cancelled as well. Bottom line is it is cash
out of the pocket of the performer. I feel as bad for the artist when
this happens as I do the fans.
Weather this your your favourite line up or not, this is a real, vital
effort. Obviously Mr. Powell truely gives a damn. He must have enough
money and friends in the industry he could do something less stressful
than keep up this touring schedule!
I've witnessed a lot of pitful gigs over the years where one guy from a
previously popular band gets a bunch of hacks together to go out and
slaughter the old hits for a few bucks.

still eating humble pie - FatDrummer was only one of a few Sunderland
fans who i was being a clever git to, before they kicked our asses!
'Andrew Wills' - no idea what your agenda is, but do not drag my name
into it - I'm just a music lover, man. Dee....I have a live recording of
your 1st Ash gig - if you'd like a copy, email me and I'll be happy to
send you one. Billy Auld...you and I have had (good natured)
disagreements in the past over Ash's current standing in the 21st
century, and their chances of getting big again, but (shock horror!) I
agree with you about the Heep/Ash double header. Over in the States,
bands like REO Speedwagon, Styx, Journey, Foreigner and Survivor often
team up to play bif summer tours. Their combined pulling power means
they can play substantially larger venues (arenas & suchlike) than
they'd be able to fill on their own. A smaller scale tour over here
featuring the likes of Ash, Heep, Man, Stray, Focus etc etc could really
pull in the punters.

Hi Billy, just to say Ashbone U Wish would be more than happy to appear
at Ashcons or any Wishbone Ash related event. We now have a replacement
Ted/Laurie and are almost ready to give it another go, but like Ashcons,
will only survive with support from the 'diehards'. I think we have
proved that we are in no way conflicting with the real WA, on the
contrary, can vouch for rekindling interest in many who had lost touch!

Can you imagine Wishbone Ash supporting Mott the Hoople? There was
obviously no justice in the world then as there is now!!! Ray, I bet you
never had the bottle to go up and talk to your heroes!!!! Suppose we
would all have been the same in these circumstances. I've just been
talking to an old friend regarding the bands we used to go see in the
70's and i was amazed to find that he was totally ignorant to all the
bands who are still on the go but don't get the press to inform them of
their existance!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! the internet gives you all you
need to know if you are that interested.

I should have stuck with my first instinct regarding Andrew Wills. He is
obviously the saddo who has a vendetta against Gary Carter. Please
ignore him everyone. Regarding the "Heep" "Wetton" gig. Instead of being
disappointed and negative, let's try to convince the promoters concerned
that a WISHBONE ASH and URIAH HEEP double header would be a goer for the
near future {not sure if JW would want to get involved }. My biggest
disappointment is that ASHCON has been pulled this year. I appreciate
Andy Yates's efforts over the past few years but surely the event
doesn't hang on one man's efforts? We should seriously consider as from
now to get a new team together who will be able to put the event back
on,maybe not this year but certainly next year. As a suggestion for this
year why don't we speak with the Classic Rock Society who put on the
Rotherham show which has Claire Hammill supporting to make this the
Ashcon event. We could have an afternoon acoustic event organised if we
can get the use of a local pub's function room. Maybe invite Claire and
others to do some stuff. What about Ashbone u wish or even the Blue
bishops who are on the road around then to do a spot. Anyone else got
any suggestions?

fair enough, the issue of "this band could be bigger than what it is" is
not a new one. i do feel they have missed a good opportunity to sell
themselves to the heep fans but there you go. still plenty of other
opportunities for us diehards to see the band on the uk tour - just hope
no more of them get cancelled! when i book a ticket for wishbone ash i
want to look forward to the gig, not worry about if it's going to
actually go ahead!

Andrew, Classic Rock Productions put the information out. If Gary Carter
hadn't shared it with the forum, I was about to. When I see shows
advertised, I pass them on without verifying them first. Ray, my first
WA experience was many years ago, I must've been 16. Somehow a copy of
"New England" made it into my house (sister's boyfriend?) and I listened
to it quite a bit. What struck me most was "You Rescue Me" and to make
it just right, it happened to be summer. I'd listen to that on late
summer nights, and it was totally fitting and stuck with me. Around
1994, when I hooked up with the guy I would eventually marry, I knew he
was also a big music fan, so I asked him if he had the song. He put it
on a tape for me. A short time later, I was listening to a recording of
"Argus" that he had on tape. He was waiting for a big reaction from me
and I was like - eh. It's a guy's album. King Will Come, Throw Down the
Sword, and all that. He was baffled. About 6 months later I happened to
listen to it again, and I was blown away! In fact, I never made it past
"Sometime World" most of the time because I played it over and over. I
really lit up, and the bass/guitar jam at the end of the song was like
nothing I'd ever heard before. So that night, I said, Wow! That album is
pure genius! Who's the bass player? And he pulled out all his Wishbone
Ash albums and I started listening to them, particularly the earlier
stuff as those were his favorites. Then I picked up the CDs as they came
out. The Laurie Wisefield era is my favorite. Sorry to everyone who's
already heard this story!

oops, i really did try not to upset andy yates with my previous post but
it looks like i failed. yes i know him and guy are not employees and i
am not in any way getting at them. i suppose it was just a bit of
frustration - i passed the astoria on monday and nearly bought a ticket
for the heep gig - would i have got a refund? no i dont think so. i do
understand why there would be a clause about not playing the same place
twice in quick succession but the news of the heep double header came
out before the april 04 gig and i am sure that a compromise could have
been found. if i am blaming anyone it is the band (andy) for not getting
himself a decent promoter/booking agent. i feel bad about saying this as
the band have given and continue to give us a lot of pleasure, but
really this problem of second rate back up goes all the way back to the
70s.

that tosser Gary Carter for posting false info (as always) giving us
false hopes about a false gig. What authority did he have to post that
info. Bet Andy Powell's really chuffed with him. And what does any of

Mike T. - I think you're being a tad unfair. AshCon US was cancelled
after the Iraq war broke out and the reservations thinned out
considerably; AshCon UK was cancelled due to Andy Yates's unfortunate
circumstances. BTW, Andy Y is a mere fan, not an employee, albeit a very
dedicated fan. The other non-starters were the fault of promoters, venue
managers etc. As for the April 4th gig, I don't think that they should
reschedule a long-planned headlining gig in favor of a support spot for
someone else.

Just cruising through this message board for the first time today and
have a couple of comments to the posters. Official, Un-Official, who
cares! As long as the factual word about Wishbone Ash gets out.
The U.S. is now rediscovering what the UK has always known as to the
viability of our band. This renaissance is due mainly to the hard work
that goes into the web sites on both sides of the Atlantic. It's through
this flow of information that keeps the fans informed of all that's
going on in the world of Wishbone Ash. Just think if we had to rely on
other media outlets to do it for us. Oh, we've already been there with
that and it's taken years to rebuild our base. Thanks to the internet
and sites like this, people who though Wishbone Ash broke up 20 years
ago are coming back into the fold and re-discovering the band.
This in fighting is totally stupid and hurtful to the objectives both
sites are trying to set forth. Every era and configuration of Wishbone
Ash has had it's positives and negatives, but dwelling on the past only
tends to narrow ones view of the total picture. I for one can appreciate
every line-up of this band and have enjoyed watching and listening to
the bands progression over the years. We can all sit around and say
"What If", but the fact remains that Wishbone Ash is what it is now, and
we should all be thankful that Andy and the lads are still out there
delivering the goods.
If you want to ponder a "What If" try pondering your world without
Wishbone Ash. Not a pleasant thought. It's time to appreciate what we
have and dwell on the positives, not the negatives.
Cheers,
Leon

no offence taken Mike but let me first point out that neither I nor Guy
are "employees" we are just fans like you who are prepared to get our
hands dirty at the coal face.
I posted this info this morning immediately after finding it on the
classic rock productions web site, my motives... to share info between
fellow fans. I thought it might be helpful to post the information. I
knew nothing about this gig being cancelled until I just tripped over it
on the web site. The band only actually have five employees. 4 play
music and one books gigs. Each year they gig for 6 months, and
cancellatoions such as this are ot the bands fault. Its promoters who
get it wrong every time, to point out the bans commitment to their gig
obligations, just think back a few years. Roger had a medical problem
and a fan (Chris Auld) played Bradford in Rogers place. now THATS
commitment. So, email the venue promoters, and if you want to have a go
at me abou AshCon, read the post on dot com. I explained it there.

About "the first time": Fell in love with the band way back in 1972.
Bought the albums and created a discography web site in 1994 (ten year
anniversary next summer!). URL: www.saunalahti.fi/fubb/index.htm. Didn't
see the band live until 1997 when I finally attended AshCon in
Mansfield. Although not a band member, Martin was there too playing and
singing a coulle of songs. Great memories! Seen the band a few times
after that and have no problems with the fact that a Finn is currently
Andy's counterpart ;-).

Hi Ray. Mmmm, what's up? The first time I saw Wishbone was in Danbury,
CT on the Illuminations tour. Even though MT wasn't there, it did really
trigger something in me and I got even more into the band. I was either
in the front row or very close to it. But I remember that Andy's guitar
sounded very loud and shrill that night & it didn't help that I was
standing in front of his amp. So I kept trying to move into the middle
so I could hear a better mix of the music. I do remember that Roger
really stood out for me that night. The next time I saw them was in '99
in Chicago at the House of Blues. Now that was a great show! I've seen
them several times since then, and although I've liked Mark Birch and
Ben, I still would like to see Andy take more leads/solos.

Some cool "first time" stories here! First time I saw the Ash in the
flesh wasn't until 1999, despite having been a fan for many yers
previously. They played a tiny club in London called Blues West 14. The
venue was like a restaurant with a stage in the corner! People were just
finishing their meals as the band came on!The sound was great, and it
must have taken a lot of work to get so good a sound in so small a room.
The line-up was Andy, Bob, Ray and Mark Birch, and they played a
blinder."Bare Bones" was just out, so they slipped a few acoustic tunes
into the set, alongside a nice mix of classics and more obscure numbers.
They played "Sometime World", too, which made my night. Did anyone else
attend this gig?

I first saw them on the same tour that Ray mentioned - Dec 12th 1892 at
Portsmouth Guildhall. After playing Argus many times each day since the
summer, I was extremely pumped-up for the show and boy, they delivered!
I also saw 3 of them in a Range Rover by the stage door on my way to the
theater - they were 'hooting' the horn trying to get Martin Turner to
hurry up and join them. He emerged shortly thereafter with
wife/girlfriend in tow. I was quite star struck.
I bought tickets for a show in New Jersey - they were allegedly touring
with Foghat. I arrived at the club only to learn that they could not
secure American Visas, so they were replaced on the bill by an X-rated
comedian. I got my money back; that was quite a low point. Does anyone
else out there remember that tour??
I last saw them at the Pawling NY show and the band were as great as
ever, albiet with a different line up. Looking forward to the NY gigs at
the Bottom Line and the end of tour show in Annapolis.

Hi...I just felt like responding to AW's message re when we have seen
the band. My first memory is of a concert in the 70's when I had the
pleasure of listening to the guys at the Fairfield Halls in
Croydon..yes..in their heyday! It was around Xmas time and they played
Jingle Bells in the two harmony guitar style...mmm....and I also
remember Ted making a hash of a number of his parts...lol. I love Ted to
bits and think that much of the inspriration for the Argus album may
have come from him (any views?). The last time I saw my favourite band
was in Chiddingfold....fantastic...were any of you guys there? Just
loved reading about there being three different guitarists supporting
the band during the difficult period when Ben's dad sadly passed
away....great to know that Andy was still mates with the filling in
guys. And Dee....mmmmm.

Billy Auld! That name rings a bell in my foggy mind...Remind me why I
know you, did we meet?
I remember the gig in York and the ensuing mahem well. Andy, me, and the
boys had arrived a tad early and had settled in to the lounge area to
catch some winks. Suddenly a voice was screaming to wake up.....the van
had been robbed!!! We discovered that the thieves had taken the case
with our tour itenerary info, maps, some cash, and other essentials.
That's why we went into the streets with "broom handles"! Our tour plans
were gone! We hoped that the scoundrels would take the cash and throw
the bag aside, which contained all the information to continue the tour.
We didn't care so much about the money, we just wanted to carry on and
play the music. We needed the tour paperwork! We went scouring the
places in York where that element goes, homeless shelters and such. We
rummaged though garbage cans. It was quite an education in the social
strata of England. Anyway, here's the intigueing part of the story; Mike
Mindel (bandleader/keys) contacted the local radio station with the
story. They broadcasted the item on the station. We carried on the tour
somehow and finished it. When we got back to America, the abandoned case
complete with all it's info arrived in a package. Someone in the UK had
heard the story on the radio and seen the case floating in a river or
something. Between them and the radio station, they got it back to us. I
remember thinking, "God Bless those beautiful Brits!" True story....ask

Hi Jon
I remember the Blue Law tour with affection but what sticks out most in
my mind is the YORK gig where the band's van was broken into and
everyone grabbing broom handles etc and running up and down the streets
looking for the scum who did it...LOL Funny in hindsight but at the time
very infuriating for everyone.
Love and peace

Well, I hope I didn't open a can of worms when I posted recently about
the availability of the Blue Law CD, and accidentally referred to this
site as the "official UK site". That's just how my browser saw it. I
read back into the forum and it seems my posting may have been the one
that brought this little wrinkle to light. I do agree that all the Ash
sites should live in harmony, isn't that the essence of the WA sound,
really; a harmony of guitars and of voices? Anyway, I hope that my
particular posting, and the fact that I'm talking about the new Blue Law
CD, has not put anyone off. I'm sincere when I say that I'm doing the CD
for the love of it. I fronted my money and will probably break even at
best. I just love the Blues, and I recognise that blues and folk are the
roots of Wisbone's (and most every rock band's) sound. I'm sorry if I
came on too strong. I'm excited about this recording.
Anyway, on a lighter note, I hear the tour is going great. I met a new
friend named Jim thru the whole Blue Law thing, and he emailed me to say
that he attended the very first night of the American WA tour and said
"My two boys and I saw the opening night of the current Wishbone Ash
tour last night and were totally blown away. They played to a packed
house and delivered all the classics as well as some of the new CD. I
took a few pics.
Last night's show was amazing with the highlight being a midset version
of Phoenix. Love that song!!!"
I myself have been feeling nostalgic lately about when Andy, the boys
and I were writing songs and playing, so as I recently told Slipkid, I
took out all my Wishbone Ash CDs, poured myself a nice tall vodka and
orange juice, and had me a little WA fest in my living room. Glad my
wife was out, I turned the stereo WAY up. Damn good stuff.

As one not conversant with the 'politics'of WA,I find the postings of
late somewhat bewildering!
I just love the music.
I will say this;I feel Gary does one hell of a job, organising and
arranging this site.I can only speak as I find, and in my (limited)dealings
with Gary,I have found him to be personable and most helpful. It is easy
to criticise an individual, but constructive comment requires a more
thoughtful approach.
Ps.Listening to Pilgrimage of late has reminded me of how 'lightly'Steve
Upton played on those earlier albums.Whether it was due to the
compositions themselves(often Jazzzier/looser),or a change in
emphasis,I'm not sure.Much more cymbal and Hi-hat though.

Hi guys, I programmed this site quite a few years back. Gary supplied
the content and Martin endorsed it. I'm just trying to find out if
anywhere inside the site code, it states 'The Offical UK site', if it
does then I'll remove it. Job done. I for one think the site is doing
bloody well and that all the Ash sites can exist in harmony together.
Note: It is very likely that this is just a submission to a search
engine by someone that has got the facts wrong. Cheers.

Yes, Alan (ashman), it is my responsibility for how it is portrayed and
that is why in no place on the site does it state that this site is the
"official" WA site. As I have already stated, I am making enquiries as
to why this has happened. As such I have TAKEN responsibility for this
matter. However, I repeat that I was not responsible in any way for
submitting any listing to any search engine(s). Alan (ashman), I
appreciate your concern and obvious good motives on this one.

Why is it that recently this board is virtually silent except for the
odd person casting stones against the website administrator? I find this
site much more informative regarding the current lineup's activities
than the "Official" site. Every other band has an official site and
various unofficial sites that co-exist peacefully and sometimes even
cooperate for big events. Why is there so much pitting one side vs. the
other here? Why do there have to be sides at all? Its all for the
appreciation and promotion of Wishbone Ash - past and present. Maybe
there is some vendetta against Gary or Martin or Andy Yates, for that
matter. If so, please take it elsewhere. It is not interesting or
entertaining for anyone who is not directly involved in such disputes.
This "cyber-diarrhea" makes posting here awkward and, sometimes,
insulting. Is this why so many are staying away or posting so
infrequently? I know its a factor for me. I think this is a terrific
website with loads of useful and relevant information and is
legitimately entitled to exist.

A couple of points from someone with no axe to grind.
1. Gary has stated that he has contacted Google to get this statement
rectified. If he says he was not responsible, let's give him the benefit
of the doubt.
Note this site, although not the 'official WA' site is supported by
Martin Turner and therefore its existance is absolutely legitimate as
its scope caters for ex WA members, WA history, etc and does not ignore
the current line up's activities. Peace!

Alan, yes - I have seen that also. I can confirm here that neither I nor
anyone else connected with this site was in any way responsible for that
listing. It would appear someone has taken it upon themselves to submit
this site address to a search engine without consultation or approval
from anyone connected with this site. We do not in anyway condone such
advertising. I have recently contacted Google regarding this. My
intentions have never been to mislead. So, Alan, rather than a case of
"Mr Carter telling porkies", it would appear more likely that "Mr Carter

in before any wrong conclusions are drawn!! Despite what Jon Moorehead
states this is not (and has never claimed to be!) the "official Wishbone

affiliated to the UK based official Wishbone Ash fan club, who I know

CARDY'S DOES DALLAS(no pics yet)
CARDY'S, a mobile landmark nightclub in Houston, offered two free
tickets to the entire population of "Dallas" this Friday for an upcoming
show by WISHBONE ASH, ancient rock wizards with as many postage stamp
commemorations as Elvis, according to some stud DJ at KPFT radio.
I don't make this stuff up folks, I listen to the radio.
The high quality of Rourke's UNCASTRATED ROCK show at KPFT on Fridays
may have inspired this generous offer. Maybe it was just a big misunderstanding or a TECHNICAL difficulty. Rourke offered one meager ticket to the big show for the 12th caller who
was obviously a VIP who may have demanded more than one ticket. CARDY'S, probably won't be inconvenienced if the whole town of Dallas
shows up because they will still sell a lot of cocktails. The chances of WISHBONE ASH appearing live in the KPFT studio on
Rourke's show right before the big show at Cardy's is subject to change
without notice. For more information about the free tickets please don't ask me. Just
email me with questions and comments or post them right under this
article. ABSOLUTELY NO RESEARCH WAS DONE TO VERIFY THESE FACTS however the
information came from reliable sources. That was fun but now I need to concentrate on other more important
targeted markets. Stolen from the unpublished newspaper "The American Blasphemer" please

I bought a wishbone ash cd on holiday called Wishbone Ash Their Greatest
Hits. It is published by Cedar in a "Going for a Song" series, Ref
GFS106. It has 11 tracks, all standards but some are versions i havent
heard before. For example Warrior is a very different version that i
dont remember hearing before, same as Rest in Peace, which is the first
live version i remember hearing.I do recognise Persephone which is the
same version as on the Tracks CD, you know, the one that fades out just
when it is getting interesting!! In all of my dreams, helpless, etc are
on and they may be from Live Dates 2 but i dont have that cd to compare
it agaisnt. Can anyone help me and tell me if they are just versions
from other available CD's or new versions? Thank You.

Ray, I have to admit that I loved what some of the additional musicians
brought to Bare Bones/30 anniversary show, but one thing that has bugged
me is the sound of the blues harp. It would be spot on if it wasn't for
the heap of distortion which was added! But if you don't like it anyway,
do what I do for some of the tracks - listen to the original. Aside from
that, can anyone tell me anything about the General Wolfe in Coventry.
Ive recently moved to Cov and would like to know whether it's a good

Maybe it's a case of "you had to have been there" but the Shepherd's
Bush show was a fantastic night. The multimedia production just added to
the feeling of being "immersed" in WA. All the early photos, etc. as a
back drop to the activity and music on stage, was perfect. The sight of
Andy and Laurie playing together was worth the trip alone. I must say
the party after the show was quite nice as well, with Andy's mom and
family in attendance. It's funny how people find their own fave Ash
recordings. My wife only knew of the band whilst we dated years ago but
latched on to Bare Bones immediately. I like that CD but still prefer
the electric stuff. I will admit that the additional players and the
treatment of many of those electric tunes by acoustic instruments was
very clever and it makes for another perspective to take in.

Ray, I can relate to what you're saying. However, for me the excitement
of seeing Laurie up there made up for it. I only ever watched it twice,
and that's about as many times as I've listened to the CD. I don't think
it's a "strong" show by the band. Maybe it needs to grow on me? I should
probably listen to it more, but I just really didn't like it. I like
hearing a couple acoustic songs at a show, but I'm not crazy about "Bare
Bones." I do think it was an interesting idea and certainly worth a try.
I liked Mark Birch, and thought the HOB show in Chicago in '99 was hot
and there were definite peak moments at Ashcon that year (Phoenix in
particular stood out for me). But I don't think that era of the band
translated well on recordings, if that makes sense to anyone. Still, I'm
glad it's available to us and wouldn't dream of not owning it.

Hi all
I hope all the US fans come out in droves and support the upcoming tour
- we seem to be building some great momentum. There are TWO shows at the
famous 'Bottom Line' club in September to look forward to, it would be
great if they sold out both. After the early show, I'll be driving down

do not add the right feeling for the wishbone sound. What does anyone

Gordon, what kind of music nut would I be if I didn't go for front row
center or in front of "the one to watch"? I was going to say something
about sitting at Ben's feet, so funny that you mention it! That was such
a great night and I loved being in "Ben's space." I've gotten close
before, but that was REAL close and such a relaxed atmosphere it was
almost like a private show. I usually spend nearly equal time checking
out the entire band, but that night I really focused in on Ben as it was
just too great an opportunity to pass by. It's hard to explain but I'm
sure most of you will know what I mean. Sometimes when I'm at a show and
the band is "hitting the note" and I feel those much sought after
moments of transcendence, when I forget I have a body, let alone any
problems, any past, any future, and it's like the TV boy in Willie Wonka
and the Chocolate Factory, I'm in a million pieces floating above the
crowd, kind of one with everybody and nobody, part of the music floating
up into the sky. That's the only way I can explain it. With that show,
that night, that didn't happen, but something totally different, a first
of sorts.

There are a couple of errant notes during solos, but the most glaring
mistake is after the 2nd bridge, when Ted picks up the signature guitar
line, the first 4 notes are right, then he goes flat on the high note,
nothing terrible, but it does stand out. I want to make it clear that
I'm finding fault with Ted's playing in no way, and if I had a dollar
for every mistake I ever made playing guitar...and I do plan on picking

their music, but by the time they did their tour in '72 (US) I had the
bug big time. I saw them play in a small gymnasium at Kellogg Community
Collage in Battle Creek, Michigan. I sat on the floor right in front of
Martin, and I gotta tell you, it was the best $2 I've ever spent in my
life! (And I still have the ticket stub!) When I left the show, I was
amazed at the crowd outside the building. The gym had seating for about
600, and there had to have been that many outside that couldn't get in,
and they traveled as far away as 100 miles on the chance that they would
see the show. Who ever booked WA had no idea who they were, or the
extent of their popularity. I heard they were playing a collage curcuit
for $5oo a gig! That would explain the $2 ticket charge, I can only
guess that it helped pave the way for the success of "Live Dates".
Shortly thereafter ("73) I was the vocalist in a band that did Wishbone
covers, along with Allman Brothers, but we had 3 guitarists to help pull
it off. Anyway, to justify the rambling, I recently picked up the 20th
and 30th Anniversary DVDs, and I hate to lay this on Andy, but even with
the mistakes Ted makes, there is no comparison to the feel he has for
the music. The songs that overlap on the 2nd disc lack the groove and
energy that Ted put into the music. And Martin and Steve have to be the
most underappreciated rhythm section in rock. (Move over, Keith and
John!) I guess all I'm trying to say is that at least to me, there was
only one real Wishbone Ash, and that was Mark 1. Thanks for all the
great sounds and memories, and I wish nothing but the best for the guys
in any future projects, personal or private.

Whatever happened to the plans to release a book of guitar TAB? I
thought this was planned for release before last Christmas but if it was
ever released it seems to have passed me by.

Jonathan, Mojosmoke, the band out of NY? What ever happened with that?
Did Rick Mullen play with you for a while? I saw Rick play with Savoy
Brown, and he blew me away! I later saw him play with Commander Cody and
could tell it was his playing from across a field, without even seeing
him. I had problems with your web site and stopped trying after a while.
Can you give me an update? Thanks! It's a small world - you never know
who you'll run into. If you weren't involved in that project or know
Rick, could you please let me know and then disregard by blabbing?

Hey, Wishbone fans! Greetings from Jonathan Moorehead. I sang in Blue
Law, Andy Powell's American Blues band. Early this year it came to our
attention that a bootleg of Blue Law's 1996 European Tour was
circulating among collectors, blues enthusiasts, and Wishbone Ash fans.
We decided to make this recording available to all Wishbone fans, so
that they could enjoy the houserocking blues side of Andy Powell's
considerable talent as a live guitarslinger. We got a copy and employed
today's state-of-the-art digital re-mastering technology to squeese out
every drop of fidelity we could muster. We've made this DOUBLE CD
available at our cost for studio time and packaging. THIS IS NOT SPAM!
We will probably not get our investment back, the price reflects what it
cost us to make it. Our goal is not to make a profit, but to get the
recording out there. It was an amazing show! Andy was in rare form, and
the audience demanded so many encores that we ran out of material. It is
a record of a great night, featuring some blistering guitarwork by Andy
Powell. The Double CD set is completely re-mastered and repackaged, with
some rare photos, and seldom-heard tunes. Andy and the other members of
Blue Law are aware of the project and have given their blessing. If
you'd like a copy of this rare gem, folks can email me at MOJOSMOKE@aol.com
for more info, or send a check or money order to;

Back in 77 in Blighty was in the cafeteria at work during lunchtime when
i heard a song come over radio 1? which was quite catchy, at the end i
heard the DJ say: at Number 20 'Goodbye Baby Hello Friend' by Wishbone
Ash. Well i nearly fell off me chair. To this day it's the only time
i've heard the greatest band in the world on the radio (excluding BBC In
Concert & Year Of The Child Concert).
Led Zep managed to scrape through on a few occasions.

Dee & Ray: Having given up trying to get various past girlfriends/mates'
girlfriends into 'rock' music, the only two bands that most have said
were 'OK' or even 'good' were....Ash and Journey(!).
Can't quite see why these two bands seemed to stand out for them. Melodic perhaps, not too much emphasis of fuzz pedals, 'one-louder' or 'satan
is great' lyrics...? Why didn't they like Genesis much then I wonder...

Can remember the line. Thought at the time that the name wishbone ash
sounded quite cool and it was used because of this, and was nothing to
do with Ash. Good to know if this was right?.

In the late 70's, browsing through my Mum's mail order catalogue, I
stumbled across a 'Wishbone Ash' clothing line, so I bought a very hip
green collarless shirt, which I wore for years. I never did find out how
long this clothing line was available, or even what promted WA to get
into the clothing business in the first place. Anybody know anything
about this??

Great to see Poco mentioned. During the ealier 70s and even now, very
much into American country rock, and whilst loving the Eagles big time,
POCO were even a greater fav. Very much underrated, which was not
dissimilar to ASH. Everyone at school was into Purple, Zep, Queen and
Yes. Managed to catch Poco at Oxford Poly, and a class act they
were/are. Problem today is that like so many American acts, not worth
them coming over here anymore in financial terms. Same with Heart,
Mellencamp, Pat Benetar, Frampton, Journey, Grand Funk, 38 Special, the
list is endless. At least Ash tour the US now, so good luck to you lot
over there.
As to the girls not sharing the same taste in music, I am lucky, married
after going out in 6th form, and bought up and share same musical tastes
since 73.
On a seperate subject, in terms of Ash memorabilia, can remember buying
from fan club a little denim bag with the Ash emblem masde out of felt
on the side. Can also remember taking a massive publicity board with
actual stick on album covers of the first four LPs from the Ally Pally
gig, and having to hitch home from London to Swindon with it under my
arm. Anyone else got any Ash memorabilia out there?.

Ray, thanks for the kind words. Wishbone Ash is my favorite band having
taken that spot away from the Allman Brothers about 5 years ago - but I
still love them, too. I feel like I'm the lucky one because my husband
is as big a music nut as I am, even more, and 90% of the time we agree
on music to the point that I say - I've got a song to play for you, and
he'll say yeah, I know, I was listening to that last week. I am on a
couple band lists, and women are very few and far between. I'm not sure
why; maybe they are busy with their families. I never had children (and
now I'm paying for it because my husband's grandkids are living with us!
haha) and I had the freedom to go to lots of concerts and always
listened to music every day. I'm lucky in that most guys are okay
talking with me. I appreciate the openness and courtesy of everyone on
this forum and can say that no one has treated me like I was "just some
stupid girl." Thanks. Bob C, I really like Poco, too. I'm hoping to
catch them live - there's still so much talent in that band, it would be
a shame to miss seeing them.

Loved the message from Dee...so nice to hear a positive view of Wishbone
from a female! I have had such a hard job finding any enthusiasm from my
girlfriends/wives over the years! I'm also sad that at the concerts it
is a mainly male audience. This lack of females attending must surely
disappoint the band members...lol? Why does the band attract mostly the
blokes?
Just got the 1989 DVD live at the Colston Hall.Bit short, but sentimental
value for me,as it's my hometown & I was there.
On another matter, I wish to refer to the early Wishbone videos: who on
earth was operating the cam...and who edited them?
In my view they are so bad...anyone else have an opinion?

Let me see now...memories a bit hazy, but I'm sure here in the UK,WA
charted reasonably high(for them)in 1981,with the cover of The
Temptations'"Get Ready".I know it was played a few times on Radio
One,and I thought(maybe erroneously)that they appeared on Top of The
Pops!Maybe someone out there can confirm(or refute)this for me.

Interesting to hear about WA in USA, amongst other bands. Growing up in
the era when Brit bands were hot news and innovative musos not only in
the small Island of Britain but also in the big West, it was a matter of
frustration to us here in the UK that our fave band never really broke
through to a great extent there. We in the UK are proud of the calibre
of bands such as Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and WA. One of my fave US bands
are/were Poco, who consistently produce class music. They were latterly
in the shadow of The Eagles, and serves to illustrate to me the vagaries
of the music bizz (listening to much of the 'Legacy' CD proves the point
to me). It is just a big shame that the best music doesn't always get on
to rock compilation records let alone more mainstream stuff like MTV and
even VH1. But whoever said that life was fair?
I've only been into Wishbone Ash since 1989, when a friend who owned a
local record shop here in Philadelphia, PA played "No Smoke Without
Fire" and "Just Testing" for me (I was only a year old when Argus was
first released so I missed out on a lot the 1st time around) Most of the
WA fans I've met over the years were either from here on the East Coast
or from the mid-West. Chicago and Detroit seemed to have been big
strongholds for British bands like WA and Uriah Heep (also my 2 faves)in
the early 70's. So, it does seem like Wishbone Ash's popularity may have
been in various pockets throughout the States. Its a massive country
with a great love of horrible music (i.e. boy bands, rap, etc) so its
not surprising that a talented band like WA never got too much airplay
on mainstream radio. Other places where I've met some die-hard Wishbone
ash fans: New Orleans, Little Rock and Dallas. So maybe I should throw
the South in the mix now as well!

Eddie, sorry, I didn't even address your main point! No, lots of British
bands were popular here. I don't think that had anything to do with it.
It could've, sure, but I don't feel like it should have. British bands
were big here.

Eddie, I'm a newer fan as I didn't start listening to
Wishbone Ash until around 1994. Before that, the only experience I had
was I got a hold of a copy of "New England" somehow, maybe a boyfriend
of my sister's or something lent it to her and I came across it in our
house and used to listen to it for a while.
For me, Ash was ALWAYS a British band and I think for most Yanks too.
The biggest frustration being a fan since '72 was the fact they never
got their due in the States. Up until the mid 70s, radio was still
somewhat "progressive"and one could hear new material from new bands all
the time. WA was one band that did get some play at that time. My
friends and I were musicians ourselves and searched out the musically
progressive bands like Wishbone Ash. They were a major influence on me
as a guitar player (maybe too much?)because Andy, Ted and Laurie were
always advancing their tone and styles in the music. They challenged the
listeners who heard them.Good music and lyrics should do that.Martin's
playing has always been overlooked. He is one of the greatest bassists
of all time! He didn't just play bass lines, he created "themes" within
many of the songs. Despite all their tours of the USA, it was my
impression the band was always well regarded but without that top ten
hit, fame in the USA eluded them. We have short attention spans here in
America due to lack of proper English bitter and real ales to drink. I
need a return trip the UK.
As for people a few years older than me, I think there was just a flood
of good music happening during the earlier days of the band, when they
had their greatest chance of taking off in the US. The heck with a hit,
some of the best bands never had a radio hit, but to so many people,
that's where they got turned on to music at - the r |
