Gordon, David Byron died of a heart attack in Feb. 1985 following years
of severe alcoholism. Bob C., I agree with you. Byron is sorely missed.
Any fan of David Lee Roth or Freddie Mercury need only to see one Uriah
Heep show (between 1970 and 1976) to see where they got their stage
personas from. There is an exciting new book called "David Byron - Born
to Perform" due for release this month in UK. It was written by Jeff
Perkins and it looks to be an excellent read.

Wow, I remember Automatic Man! I din't think anyone remembered them. Ex
Santana drummer Michael Shrieve was in that band. Micheal and I were in
a loose project together, years before Blue Law, that unfortunately
never made it past the planning stage. Great drummer. Does anyone
remember his project called Transfer Station Blue? How about Novo Combo?

I posted a review of the Leicester gig on the .com site this morning,
but the forum seems to be down at the moment so here is a summary for
people here:
Set list - every song from Argus except "Leaf & Stream", Almighty Blues,
FHL & Changing Tracks from Bona Fide, Wait up the Storm from
Illuminations, Blind Eye, Phoenix, Living Proof, Jailbait & Ballad of
The Beacon. Two hours in all, excellent show, Ben especially on top form
- lots of embellishments added to the songs to make them less familiar.
Recommend seeing them if you can.

often as i can and thoroughly enjoyed whitchever line up was playing. My
children female 24 and son 19 were both brought up on Wishbone and we
are going to the Brook gig at the end of the month. How lucky we are
that Andy keeps going and giving us all this fantastic music because
throughout all the great line ups there has always been Mr Powell. keep

This one's for Dee.
I've just come home from the Blue Bishops gig which was in a village
about 5 miles from where I live. Martin was in great form although a
little tired but always the true professional he delivered the goods as
only he could. The Bishops are a very good outfit with many great
elements to them, way above an average blues rock band. They set out their
stall to give you honest ,straight forward rockin' blues and don't
disappoint! Wishbone Ash it's not but as Martin said it has the energy
and edge that Wishbone portrayed in the early days. So, just to make Dee
green with envy we sat right under Martin's nose and spent some time
chatting with him during the interval and after the gig. I still find it
incredible that this guy was actually playing in the village next to
where I live to an audience of only about 70 people!!!???!!! Don't
people understand the contribution this man has made to British rock,He
obviously doesn't either. The sooner Martin gets his butt in gear the
better! Wether it's with Wishbone Ash or a whole new set up Martin is
too great a talent to be playing in this kind of situation,he DESERVES
better! He owes it to himself to be more creative. I admire and respect
Martin so much that it hurts to see him not getting the recognition and
respect that he deserves.Just talking to him makes you aware that this
man has a depth of knowledge, ability and awareness in music that very
few have.It was a real priviledge to speak with him tonight in a very
relaxed and informal situation, just wish we could have spoken longer.I
mentioned to him that on the .com site someone mentioned the notion that
maybe Locked In could be reworked the way that Wishbone and the material
would be better presented and he went on to describe the difficult
circumstances surrounding the recording and how he came to hate
everything about the album from the perspective but I feel like many
fans that the material should and could be reworked to what it should
have been in the first place.Having said that I think Locked in gets a
worse press than it deserves. Anyway time for bed.

Billy and Dave, I love you guys!!! Billy, you are right, I am so
jealous, you just lived my dream. What I wouldn't give to have been in
your shoes. I have thought seriously about making a trip to England so
that I could see Martin play in person, but then my husband's 2
preschool grandkids had to come and live with us and life changed pretty
quick! I e-mailed Simon Burrett (Blue Bishops) and his wife Sue a year
or so ago about the possibility of them coming to play some blues
festivals in the US, but that's leaving things to chance. When will
Martin play his last show? When will my last chance have passed me by? I
hate to think of it. I think I'll have to come over there. I couldn't
agree with you more about Martin and his contribution to music, and how
much it's meant to me personally. I would love to see the Blue Bishops
or hear another project similar to "Reeperbahn". I would love to see
Martin get something together where he could be the principal
songwriter. I think he still has a lot to say musically; and I would
love to hear what he has to say about the past 10 years of his life's
experiences. I don't believe that ideas have dried up on him; he still
must carry a little book around with him to write lyrics in! Do ideas
really dry up for the man who writes songs like "Life Line" and "New
Rising Star"? I love nothing better than turning on music friends to WA,
in particular bass players to Martin. He's like a secret hidden gem that
I pull out and share with others. As for "Locked In" it does have "Say
Goodbye" which is an all-time favorite. It sounds like you had a great
time, Billy. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for thinking of me.

Fantastic posts, Billy, Dave and Dee! I agree with all comments except
those concerning Locked In. I like that album a lot and listen to it
quite often. I also like funky mid-70's stuff and that album fits right
in. Its unusual in comparison to WA's other material but to me, Rest in
Peace, Say Goodbye, Moonshine, etc are great tunes. Only "She Was My
Best Friend", with its atrocious vocals, disappoints. I'd still love to
see Martin Turner and Laurie Wisefield put something together. They are
both sorely missed on today's music scene.

Regarding Brian W's comments on Locked in. I really came to appreciate
the material on the album when my sons started playing loads of WA
stuff. Locked in is actually one of our Chris's favourite Ash albums he
played it ove and over and over. I agree about the weak vocals on "She
was my best friend" but I think its a marvelous song, very moody and
seems to indicate a very personal situation for the writer.I suppose
it's one of these songs that lets you inside someones head if you know
what i mean. If ever you want to hear some good live renditions of
Locked in material catch Moonstone sometime.

Hi guys!
Just to disagree for a moment........ I think that Martin's vocals on
'she was my best friend' are great. It is not what you would normally
call a 'great vocal sound', but then again some of these old blues
guitar players have rubbish sounds, its about how you play or how you
sing in this case.
The sound and sentiment of the overall song is quite fragile, as is
Martin's vocal, but the passion and 'feel' with which he sings the song
is really lovely.
Gordon, if Andy was playing the low harmony back then as he does now,
then it was Ted who made the little mistake.
Thanks for the plug dad-although we dont actually do any from locked in,
I just keep saying that we should, and John if you're reading this-we
should!

Good on you Brian W & Billy Auld, for your comments on Locked In. I am
sure there must have been a “Bluffers Guide” to WA published at some
time, that was less than complementary about Locked In and since then it
has been the fashion to knock it – in my view unfairly. At this time of
year, I cannot help but play one of my favourites, New England. (also
Locked In). I was lucky enough to spend a week a few years ago
travelling around New England in the Fall when the trees were turning
(one of the loveliest places I have been), and you can see where they
got there inspiration from. I remember crossing a covered wooden bridge
in Connecticut that spanned the Connecticut River (Fred would you or
someone know where this is?). Great times and great music! This set me
thinking. There is so much WA material that I really, really like and I
guess has never ever been played at one of their concerts. Is a high
percentage of their set list of the WA material from the pre Bona Fide
era repeated tour after tour? I am no great shakes at statistics but it
would seem to me that this might be the case? Please don’t beat me up on
this one, as I like nearly all their material and I cannot wait to see
WA again next week – but there is some great less played material that I
would really love to hear live. If WA played a radically different set
list on their schedule next year, would this stop people going to the
concerts? I somehow do not think so. Is it too much effort for the band
to learn and rehearse different material? I would love to see WA or
Moonstone/A-U-Wish do some of the other material. What do other people
think?

when they brought FUBB out of the old war-chest. Fabulous rendition from

Eddie, I have to agree with your comments on New England, also a
favorite of mine...maybe my most fave WA album. Locked In did get short
shrift here in the USA when it came out. I think it was due in part to
the fact Tom Dowd had produced some hits with the Allmans and Clapton t
and an expectation level had been set way to high by many in the music
press and fans alike. It was also a major gear change from There's the
Rub's songwriting. The production tried to make WA into something like a
Lynyrd Skynyrd (another Dowd band)and took all the British sound away
from what could have been a great album. As far as that covered bridge
you mentioned, it could have been one of the many along the CT and
Vermont border. My guess is perhaps the Cornish bridge in New Hampshire?
The leaves are in full color right now and it's my favorite time of the
year here. I love taking the Harley out and finding some back roads to
wind through. It's funny, I find England feels so much like home when I
go there. This region is indeed well named "New England". Biggest
differences are we can't play soccer and our beer sucks.

I was wondering why the song Number the Brave never did much. It was one
of the saving graces on the album of the same name. When I listen to
this album now (I've added the non-LP B-side, My mind is Made Up to the
CD for the car) and its not a bad album despite the loss of MT. Still,
the title track will always be the best song on there for me. I would
like to see that added to the set as its a really rousing tune that
might get the crowd going.

I'm not the type of person who does reviews as such, so suffice to
say, last night in Liverpool was a fantastic gig, and the first time I'd
seen the
current line-up. The setlist was nice & varied, with 'Standing In The
Rain' and 'FUBB' being the standout tracks for me. A nice age-range
was in attendance ranging from young kids, through to the
twentysomethings (like myself & my wife) and onto the old-timers!
Speaking of old-timers, it was a very great pleasure & privilege to
meet Alan Pye, a name I've known since 1991 due to his letters to
Gary C's fanclub magazines. It was great to share a few beers with Alan,
and Tanya & I
hope to see him again at the next Liverpool gig.
It was also good to meet the band after the show, as they came out to
sign autographs & say hello. Had a nice chat with Ray Weston who
commented that the band all get on really well together - although he
was at pains to point out they don't sleep together! Andy did say the

was a venue favoured by the band. When questioned about the Cavern, he
said it was a bit small, which i'd agree with, given Wishbone's sizeable
following in the North West. I never normally used to miss a tour, but
work and other commitments have got in the way, the past couple of

This thread, as you know, is doing the rounds on the .com board. Whilst
I agree that this tours set list is too heavy in favour of Argus, songs
like Wait Out The Storm and Standing In The Rain were given a debut or
were brought out for the first time in an age. Over the past few tours
i've heard plenty of variations of the set-list while still playing the
'known' songs for people that might be first timers or seeing the band
for the first time in years. These people CANNOT be ignored and the more
rabid of us will have to live with it. As long as the set has new or
re-introduced songs each tour then we should support what the band is
doing. That perfect balance is virtually impossible.
So...the 'fans' were relieved when FUBB was aired?
Sorry mate....i'm just relieved when i'm at front of stage watching the

Have to agree with FatDrummer on that one. There are plenty of folk, my
father amongst them, who perhaps only own a couple of Wishbone records
but will still turn out to see them on tour once in a while....for these
folks it's necessary to have a big chunk of Argus in the set, as it just
may encourage them to come back next time the band are in their area!

Just a few comments from one of the “rabid” element, on some of the
recent postings regarding the variety of material in the WA playlist. I
think we can all agree that we really are blessed that WA have created
what I believe is a wealth of good material. I am proud of owning and
liking other WA records besides Argus, and would love the opportunity to
hear some of the lesser played material played live. Does this represent
a lack of support/respect for the band? I don’t think so. I buy their
CD’s, DVD’s and try and see them live. Should I be content and be
grateful that “it is necessary to have such a big chunk of Argus in the
set” because some fans possibly only own a couple of WA records? I don’t
think so! Letting fans hear a wider range of WA material might encourage
them to add a few records to their collection. I understand the point
that the FatDrummer is making – that there is a core set of favourite
songs that the live WA fans would expect and want. Whilst the perfect
balance probably isn’t possible, providing some variety should be.

but let's fantasise for a while. We could book one of those holiday
villages for a weekend and have the various line ups perform a whole
feast of material over 3 days. At the same time we could have the likes
of Iron Maiden,Thin Lizzy etc to guest and give a rendition of some WA
material as well. Who would pay to have this kind of weekend??!!?? ME
for one.Could the performers realistically do this for the FANS,why not?
Would it be financially viable? ofcourse!Name the ticket
price,£100,£200,or more for a weekend inc. accommodation, multiply by
2-3000 heads and it could certainly be achieved.Would knock Ashcon into
a cocked hat,LOL.

Hey Buck
Yuo're bang on about the lack of communication between me and Chris and
that's not just because we are father and son. Chris is a very quiet
reserved guy who thinks everyone around him is telepathic. Steve always
organised chris's life for him and Chris is all at sea without his big
brother. I just don't know if he will ever be able to get himself
organised without him! same goes for me.

Billy, your gathering of all WA members past and present sounds great to
me! From this day forth, I declare it my new favorite daydream. Although
I just might get and keep Laurie, Martin, and Steve up there on stage
with Andy, being that I'm partial to that era! :-)
It's good to see other fans of "New England" stepping forward.
I also can see the merit in having the band play songs from each CD in
order to increase sales of the back catalog. As a casual fan of other
bands, it's nice to hear recognizable songs, but good music is good
music, regardless of the song title and whether I've ever heard it
before. I have bought CDs based on songs I've heard at live shows.

'Who the heck plays in Eb'...
Well, most of the jazz community for a start. Most blues is played in
the flat keys (F, Bb, Eb...and often C). Ash's music - especially the
early stuff - is based on the blues so it's not that weird.
You're going to tell me that that's the only song in that type of key
now aren't you!!
Having said that, a lot of rock music seems to be played in D, A etc..
Written on guitars whereas jazz gives a nod to brass players/instruments
who find it easier to play in the flat keys.

I don't think there is any other Wishbone song in Eb - and why did they
do it in that key on the album when they've always done it in E live?

it is of course possible that it was played in E on Pilgrimage, but the
pressing was mastered too slow, hence the slightly dropped key. King
Will Come on Argus suffered this. Listen to the original vinyl or CD
versions - it runs slower and flatter than the live versions. Now listen
to the remastered Argus CD, where Martin has corrected the speed/key.

Speaking of the remastered Argus, why was Sometime World shorter (the
final solo on the fade out) than on the original CD. I never had the
vinyl but the first CD version of Argus in the US contains a Sometime
World that is about 10 or 15 seconds longer than the remastered CD. That
is an incredible solo and I hate that it fades out sooner. Still, the
sound is greatly improved. Any chance of remastering "There's the Rub"
for a 30th anniversary edition next year? I still contend that the CD
(at least the US version) needs it badly.

Saw Ash at the Stables on Wednesday. Good as always. However must admit
I enjoyed the non-Argus stuff more, Time Was and Sometime World apart
which really impressed, as storming versions of Standing in the Rain,
Jailbait, and the "new" song. Two hours or great music from a band that
looked like it was really enjoying itself. Gig was a sell out and doubt
if they had played a couple less Argus tracks, will affect the next Ash
gig here which is bound to be another sell out.

I think Martin used a Rick on 'No Smoke'; the sound is a little flatter
but fits well with that particular album. I always thought that 'The

Seamus, Mike, and others pondering the significance of Eb! Many bands
tune down half a step, from E to E flat, and they do it for a number of
reasons. Could be the ones you list, but could sometimes it's to suit
the singer's vocal range - it can be easier to hit higher notes if the
guitars are tuned down, and it's easier to tune the guitars down so that
you can use standard chord shapes. Playing in "flat" keys can be a bit
fiddly! Also, some guitarists prefer the tone you get when detuned
slightly, and you can bend the strings more forcefully, as there's
slightly less tension. Yngwie Malmsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughn used to
tune to E flat (I think SRV did if memory serves). A lot of Nu Metal and
Death Metal bands get their sound by tuning down from E to D and even C
in some cases!

Whilst in the mood for typing, I must mention that I attended the
Guildford concert. Graham did a great job in Bob's absence (my best
wishes to him and his partner). I noted that they stuck very much to the
old numbers, this partly because I think these were the one's that
Graham new and also that they were mainly on the running list anyway.
Breaking strings always add a bit of excitement and Ben handled his one
with great expertise....and picked up a replacement guitar and continued
almost seamlessly! The song list seemed to cause Andy to be playing more
than usual...which was nice!

Just a note to say thanks to everyone in the Wishbone community for
their support of the Blue Law Double Live CD. As many of you know, it
has sold out. I know that Blue Law is but a tiny branch on the mighty
Wishbone family tree, and I'm amazed at the support and encouragement
offered by everyone. My duplicator tells me he has a stash of five left
that I can have, so if anyone out there would like one of the last few,
let me know.
The success of this, the great album reviews, and the feedback and
encouragement of fans has made me consider making a new compilation CD
of Andy Powell with Blue Law live on the radio. I have various gems like
the BBC stuff with Bruce Springsteen axeman Nils Lofgren sitting in, as
well as an "unplugged" American radio show we did in New York, with
legendary comedian Kevin Meaney. It's really funny. I also have the BBC
stuff we did for Paul Jones' show, (remember Paul, the radio host and ex
Manfred Mann member?) What do you think? Would anyone want it? I realize
that Blue Law was not everyone's cup of tea in the Wishbone realm, being
a bit brassy and in-your-face. I'm not looking to make a buck, I'm a
collector myself and I love sharing music. Andy does not do much playing
outside of Wishbone, and I wonder if folks would like to hear more of
his blues side. I'd love your input. It's a bit expensive to do it
right, especially in small batches. I lost money on the last one; I
underestimated how many copies I would have to give away free to
reviewers, bandmates, etc. I also gave copies to the people responsible
for making the original bootleg, and getting it into my hands. So, I
want to know if anyone cares before I do it again with a radio
compilation theme. Wadd'ya think?

Hi Dee
I know what you mean.It would be great to know that any bad feeling
between any of the original band members was buried and forgotten.Who
was it that said..."throw down the sword"? I may possibly be seeing
Martin Turner in London this weekend. If I can get a photo I'll post it

Just been listening to Planet Rock channel on the radio tonight when
they featured Hawkwind....BUT...next week (Monday 1st December) they are
featuring Wishbone and chatting to Andy. I listen to the station on NTL
on my tv (channel 880) but presumably it can be listened to elsewhere. I
think the feature bit starts at 9pm, but not sure exactly.

Billy, you lucky dog! Would you?? I've got to come over there. I can't
stand feeling like this every time I miss an opportunity to see Martin
play live. I just hope he continues making music until then. Videos are
neat, but there's nothing like the real thing. I've gotten to see so
many bands over the years, and yet Martin is IT for me, and I've never
gotten to see him play live. A month or so ago I had the chance to hear
and meet one of my top bass players (but of course, MT is #1 and stands
head and shoulders above the rest), Tim Bogert. I can't remember if I
shared it with the group, but a year ago we went to see Vanilla Fudge
and Tim couldn't make it, so I was so disappointed. Now a year after
that I finally got to see him. Whether he was just that good or I was
just so blown away because I'd probably never see anything like it
again, I don't know, but I felt myself actually shaking I was so keyed
up. And again, I've been to lots of shows, and I'm 39, not a kid. Later
I got my picture taken with Tim and Carmine Appice, with Tim kissing me
on the cheek (his spontaneous idea, honest), it was just so cool! So you
can imagine me, Miss Cool who meets musicians and doesn't blink an eye,
yet by the time Tim was done with his bass solo, I was physically
shaken. If I were to get a chance to see and meet Martin, it would be
like the culmination of every minute of music I listened to since I got
my very first record when I was 7 years old. Does that make sense or do
I sound totally "female"? Music is an extremely powerful force in my
life.

Yes, but not with WA. Its a bygone age. What would be better would be MT
out there doing his thing with a new band, playing HIS chosen selection
of music from the past as well as his solo album. Remember the good
times, yes, but dont dwell. If it didnt work in 80, 91 or 96 it aint
gonna work now. Let them go their onw way. But we still need to hear
that great voice and bass in action before we all retire

I disagree with the comment '..if it didn't work in 80, 91 and 96 it
aint gonna work now.'
WA had a succession of, largely indifferent, albums and I think the band
went through several low ebbs.
Andy and Co have worked really hard to keep the flag flying with all the
touring (gaining new fans at the same times), plus released some good
albums (eg, Illuminations, Bare Bones).
A return of MT to the fold could work - assuming everyone was happy with
the idea, including young Bob!

Billy - sorry I could not see you this week but I got sick again after
coming into contact with cement, been laid up for over a week with skin
coming off very swollen hands and arms. The Pig Sty Tapes, as we call

with some whacky noise reduction system, so it will probably need some
time consuming experimentation to get em sounding right, but I'm sure I
can get there. I've heard roughs and they are messy sounding but I'm in
communication with Guy Roberts and can hopefully pick up tapes before

but I don't think they will be ready to go out till at least spring 04.

Hi everyone,I'll probably get shot down in flames but here we go! I've
followed Wishbone from day one, I could deal with Laurie as Teds
replacement but no Martin..no Wishbone Ash! I actually rang the bands
office on hearing about Mart leaving back in 1980..Penny (Gibbons)
talked to me and said she thought it was exciting..i said its a
disaster. Who was right? Still lets consider ourselves fortunate to see
the Mark one line up in the late eighties, I doubt we will ever be that
lucky again.

Hi Jim! If you consider being able to watch an excellent Wishbone Ash
twice a year in the UK as a disaster, then fine. I would much rather do
that than maybe witness a 'cameo' appearance by the MK1 or 2 band once
in a blue moon, if ever... Jim, check out the comments made by many
people who have have seen the band live recently (particularly the
Brazil tour) on the .com site. It makes me feel rather fortunate to see
my fave band in action on a regular basis. I know many people who have
shared your misgivings but on seeing the current line-up have been

Firstly let me respond to Martin's message to me...No prob's martin,
another time for sure.I've just had a great weekend with Robin Auld in
london.Music lovers check him out.www.robinauld.co.za
Singer songwriter stuff, top notch. On the Martin Turner camp vs. Andy
Powell...sighhhhh.Anyone who thinks I don't LOVE the current line-up
doesn't know me and fair enough why should they care what I like.As fans
of Wishbone Ash we ALL must surely realise the MASSIVE contribution and
sacrifise that each band member has made over the years.Martin Turner
has made no less a contribution than any other. It could certainly be
argued that Martin's contribution has been most representative of what
makes Wishbone ash what it is.Martin has remained a true professional
throughout the years. If he was less of a professional he might have put
a lot of the story concerning his absence from the band here for the
fans to see.Suffice to say Martin has always believed that the music is
there for us to enjoy and appreciate no matter what has transpired
behind the scenes. But let me ask you this....If,as Martin has expressed
Wishbone Ash music is such a big part of him that he feels HE needs to
express...why is HE not even approached to help at a gig in his own home
town???? Do we as fans not deserve an explanation? Would we have enjoyed
seeing Martin playing HIS music? Should HE not at least have been given
the opportunity? Now before any of you start to try to knock me for what
I say just consider ALL of the comments i've made over the years
concerning the band.I know many of you don't know ALL of the back ground
to WHY Martin is not with the band now.My wholehearted belief is that
Martin,Andy,et al should give their HONEST reasons why Martin is not
with the band now.

Hi all. Billy, you seem to know all about the problems between Andy and
Mart...so why don't YOU tell us what the problems are? All that I have
gathered is that Andy chose to ask Roger to do the bass on Illuminations
rather than drag Mart to the USA for the recording...which seems to make
sense to me, seeing as how Wishbone have to record on limited budgets
these days.

Rich, why on earth would we want to see Martin back with Andy? Its
history, lets face reality. IF theyive tried it 3 times over why ever
would it work a 4th time? Andy has a fine band as it stands. What I
think MT fans should be lobbying for is Martin to form his OWN band
playing HIS contributions to WA, plus solo material. Surely this would
be a more positive step forwards than another half-baked reunion? If AP
and MT cannot work together, let's not push it but encourage them to
co-exist peacefully as seperate entities. What does others think?

Yes I agree. The best with Wishbone Ash today is that they looking

gonna be.

Er.. sorry about that last post - blame it on the Whisky! Magnus, I have
to wholeheartedly agree with you on this one - the current Wishbone Ash
is indeed a thriving and creative force, and I think fans are doing them
a bit of a disservice in their requests in asking for the 'old guard'
back again merely for 'old times sake.' Sure we'd all support Mart in
any work he may be involved in next year (and all the best to you, MT).
Whatever the old arguments, Mr P has maintained the banner of WA in
times good and bad. Just think, 2 UK tours a year, new material and
DVD's - how lucky we are!
Anyway, putting all that aside, here's wishing all you WA fans a very
Happy Christmas and a great New Year.

Hello all, and Merry Christmas to everyone. Was listening to Just
Testing tonight and Andy Powells guitar work on Insomnia in particular.
I recall a mate of mine who was a professional guitarist saying the
effect Andy had used was an octave divider (octivider in short).
Fascinating and brilliant solo in any case but ....does anyone know what
effect was used? Was my friend correct, if not I would be interested to
know how the effect was achieved.

No sorry it wasn't an octive divider on Insomnia or anything like that.
In fact it was a very early guitar synth. I think made by Roland. Hope
this helps

Guitar synths in those days were very jittery...If you played one note
with less than 100% intention, it would often set another note off.
Playing guitar synths requires a very deliberate technique. Andy Powell
could have used it, but he would have had only a 50% chance of getting
all the way through the song without dropping a few clangers. Hope this
helps. Nice to see posts showing an interest in the original bands
musical expertise.

Hi Ray,
Yes TT did all the lead work on 'Pheonix' (apart from the harmony
sections)Andy was/is pretty rooted to the wah wah chord pickings -
giving the song an edge that few bands/guitarists would have of come up
with. I don't think Andy's rhythm/chord work is given enough credit e.g.
his playing on 'Why Don't We' and of course the classic intro to 'The
King Will Come'.

Hi Al B
Thanks for your reply and I do so agree with your comments re AP's
superb rhythm guitar. Do you think that I am right that AP continues to
play only HIS solo passages or are there any examples where he now plays
those originally played by Ted or Laurie?

Ray, I believe Andy pretty much sticks to his original parts, and quite
rightly too! There may be exceptions that people may come up with, but
for the classic songs, things are kept as they were. The only
significant role changes have been in the vocal department.

Living Proof with guitarists other than Laurie, Andy plays Laurie's
lines on the end section not his own. The other player (eg.Ted) would
play Andy's chord work.

Hi All
Argus has been Wishbone's most successful album (to my knowledge) both
in sales and in terms of most popular songs when being performed live on
tour. I would love to know who wrote those songs: was it a combined
effort of Turner, Upton, Turner, Powell? Or did one of them stand out in
creating those songs? This is rather like asking who wrote the
Lennon/McCartney tunes or the Jagger/Richards ones. Anyone any ideas? I
would love to hear your views.

Hi,
About Argus. Here's a couple of things I'm aware of:
Blowin' Free's intro is Andy's idea. The rest of the
song is co-worked (a jam session at Whisky A Go Go
according to some stories) with Martin's sad story
of a meeting with a Swedish girl ;-).
The intro on "Throw Down the Sword" is Andy's warm-up
exercise.
"Leaf and Stream" is Steve's lyrics and Andy's/Ted's
composition.
All other lyrics except "Leaf and Stream" are by
Martin, of course.
Also, I guess Ted's pretty much responsible for
the quiet passage in the beginning of "Time Was".
That's what I can remember off hand.
Best Wishes - Best Bones!

Rainer's post would suggest that Martin therefore had little creative
involvement in Argus, other than lyrics. Can anyone elighten us further?

IS Fred Renz out there?? According to the he .com site, you had
something to do with an alternate WA with Ted back in the early 90's /
late 80's. Is that true?? If so, please tell us about it, I'd love to
know.
As for Martin's composing contributions to Argus, I don't think Rainer
is suggesting that Martin's contribution was confined to the lyrics, he
just could not account for everything, I s'pose. I'm sure MT had a hand
in all the songs, from the composition of the melody, the riffs
(especially the excellent bass line in SW), the guitar and vocal
harmonies to the drum breaks. If Martin reads this, perhaps he'd like to
toot his own horn a bit and tell us; inquirung minds want to know!

Gordon,
NO TRUTH to any story about my involvement with WA in ANY capacity at
any time, other than as a fan/friend. It would appear a guitar I owned
that was once Andy's has been put on Ebay and my name was added to it
for the sake of adding a "provenance" to justify its cost. I have asked
the seller to remove references to me from the ad, as I can't see how my
owning it could possibly mean anything to anyone. The history of the
guitar got "embellished" to the point where I became a member of the
band (don't I wish!. Andy had a good laugh about it when I spoke with
him the other day about it and he said "welcome to MY world".
