Fantastic to see the forum back to it's original format! Just a shame it had to be withdrawn for the reason it was. Hopefully ALL Wishbone Ash fans will see the sense in having sites that represent the contribution from the original members. Martin's right to use the name HE came up with should NEVER have been questioned in the first place. Not only did Martin come up with the name WISHBONE ASH but he was the major songwriter and prominent driving force that made the band the fantastic musical force that we first heard and loved.Steve, Andy and Ted were and still are recognised as crucial to what this brilliant band are about. Laurie was also a major contributor who deserves just as much acclaim as Andy and Ted.It's important to recognise that the band that is Wishbone Ash now is a result of many difficult and often contentious decisions made in the past. Let's look to the future and enjoy ALL Wishbone related activities from ALL past, present and future contributors to the music. It's all about the music. Billy

just read the "announcement", but with all due respect to martin's credentials, this site has GOT to start making it clear that it is acting on behalf of martin turner (whose past includes wishbone ash) and NOT "the current" wishbone ash. it is not good enough just to say you have offered to co-operate - START DOING IT NOW!
billy, i have supported a lot of what you have said in the past, but even you said recently that this site should not be called wishbone ash and should be re-named martin turner, so i cant agree with what you say below.
having said all that, i am pleased to note martin plans a year of activity and will be looking out for him!

The statement from Gary and Martin reads fair. Andy Powell wanted Nominet to review the case. That has happened and the decision is now known. The decision has to be respected, whatever ones personal opinion, so can we move on from this tiresome topic. Martin and Gary make it clear from their statement that no grudges will be held and offer to negotiate with Andy over any future issues. As fans we must let Andy take up that offer if he wants to, or pass on it if he chooses. Martin and Gary are right to ask that this is dealt with offline. We have no right to tell Andy or Martin what to do in this public forum. Fans continuing to argue over this on either site will only harm TWO artists who have both given us much pleasure over the years. MikeT: Doesn't "This site is fully endorsed by Martin Turner - the founder member of Wishbone Ash." make things clear enough? Nominet obviously thought so and, presumably, they are more qualified than us to make such decision. Let's talk about music, NOT the music business. Most intersting in the statement is news of forthcoming Martin activity. Wouldn't we be better discussing/speculating over that than keep talking about yesterdays news.

I really hope Martin has real intentions to put a project into gear this year. I also hope it involves dusting off some of the Wishbone material that has been neglected over the years. Whatever format Martin chooses I'm sure it will be well supported by his fans. Great to know that he is finally feeling able to focus on his music considering all the difficult and tragic circumstances he has had to deal with recently. See you on the road Martin! Billy

One of the great things about this site is having the opportunity to ask Martin a question in the Q+A section. Hopefully Martin will get round to addressing the questions more frequently than before! I've just posed a question and would encourage more people to do the same. Billy

Sorry about that! I'm glad to see the return of this format and the recent activity. I was watching some WA video the other night, the 1976 Rockpalast (sp?) and 1989 reunion show at Bristol (if I remember correctly). For those who haven't gotten their copy of Phoenix Rising DVD set, it's neat to have, really interesting, but I wonder about some of the album reviews! Hope that catches your interest. Also, I listened to Reeperbahn last night, New England the other day, the first one yesterday. Get your WA out and play it. I've recently been turning on a bass playing friend of mine to the beauty of Martin's tone and style. It's like hearing it all for the first time again.

Read into this what you will. I read propaganda BIG TIME.Anyone who has a preference of past line ups of the band and has expressed their preference can assume they are "nay sayers" Any Wishbone ash fan who has the notion that he can express his personal opinion and still be accepted as a fan of Wishbone ash music better think again.Either go right along with the current line up or any other line up or you are seen to be living in the past! Leon, I can't believe you believe what you have just said.

Happy New Year everyone!
It's hard to believe, but 2005 marks the 35 Anniversary for Wishbone Ash. It seems like just yesterday that I was cracking the seal on their first album and putting the needle to the grove to "Blind Eye." Well, a lot has happened over the past 35 years. Band members have left, rejoined and left again. The only constant, Andy Powell, continues on to delight the fans with Wishbone's unique, quality music for new and old a like to enjoy and savor. Who knew 35 years ago that the Wishbone flag would still be flying, when so many of the big name groups of the day are no more then memories. But the Ash survives due to the never say die attitude of Mr. Powell. For every change in the line-up something new has been brought to the table. The nay say'ers clinging to the past may never be satisfied, but for those of us who think in terms of "what is" as oppose to "what was" realize that if it weren't for the current line-up of Andy, Bob, Ray and Muddy there would be no need for this newsletter. I for one am thrilled to have been a part of the history and adventures of Wishbone Ash for the past 35 and look forward to the future, because the best is yet to come. Nuff said.
2004 was a banner year for Wishbone Ash and their fans, and it looks like 2005, the bands 35th Anniversary Year, is going to be even more exciting. Already, WA have played in Turkey to rave reviews and are currently on tour in Germany. Once the German tour is complete, Andy and the lads will be turning their attention to the Spring USA & UK tours.
In case you missed it, Andy issued this statement concerning the Tsunami victims on the Wishbone Ash web site. "As a result of the Asian Earthquake and the still unfolding tragedy, we've decided to donate the proceeds of one show from each of the four upcoming tours planned for the next 6 months, to one of the Tsunami relief funds. We thought this would be one way for us, the band, and you, our friends and supporters to do something tangible which could make a real difference." Nice one!
I have been informed that the band is currently writing new material while on tour. And have plans to continue this monumental effort in between tours. With any luck we could be seeing a new offering from Wishbone Ash by the fall of 2005. I don't know about you, but I for one am chopping at the bit for a new album from Andy, Bob, Ray & Muddy.
Speaking of Muddy, If you've not seen the Powell, Manninen guitar tag team yet, are you in for one hell of a pleasant surprise. Muddy brings some powerful chops to the table in this post Ben Granfelt era of WA. To say that this guy smokes on lead and slide guitar would be an understatement. This may well be one of the most exciting incarnations of Wishbone Ash ever.
The XM Satellite Radio Show has been mixed and is ready to go. As soon as we have a broadcast date, which should be in early February, I will post it on the web site. From what I've heard, this show will more than likely be repeated many times over the next year. Me thinks it's time to get my XM receiver!!
This just in! A date is being held for the UK AshCon in 2005. I hope to have an official announcement from Guy Roberts very shortly as to the where and when. As usual, this will coincide with the 2nd UK tour of the band in 2005.
Now for the really big news! Andy has informed me that long time fan and friend Ram Benz recently contacted him about the possibility of staging a US AshCon in Scranton, PA. Ram owns a beautiful old turn of the century theater in downtown Scranton that is fully equipped to do audio and video recording. From what I have been told, this would be a two day event and feature both acoustic and electric sets by the band. The projected dates for the US AshCon are June 3rd & 4th, 2005.
With the current value of the pound vs the dollar, this may well be the best deal going for fans of the band in the UK and Europe. As more information is received, and the "T's" are crossed and the "I's" dotted, I will pass along final details well in time for everyone to make travel and hotel plans. See you in Scranton, PA!!

Guys, we've just got our guestbook back and right away we are all bitching again. Remember why the book was closed in the first place? The dispute between the two sites is hopefully now in the past. Throughout the dispute Gary and Martin acted in a dignified manner. They did not publicly slag off the other site. They did not allow fans to do likewise on the guestbook. Meanwhile, the other site cntinually allowed itself to be used as a soapbox for those who wished to carry out malicious attacks. Whatever anyones opinion on the rights and wrogs of the result of the Nominet enquiry, it is a fact that of the two sites it was the .co.uk site which acted in the most gentlemanly manner throughout. So..let's not drag this guestbook down to the same level as the .com site forum reached a few weeks ago. Let's get back to some conversation. So, what would people like from Martin's next project. I'd love to see him pursue a direction which combines traditional Ash with some of the more offbeat stuff he used to contribute - kimnd of Argus meets Just Testing meets Here to Hear meets Reeperbahn would be nice. These are elements that have been unheard for way too long...

For Fee Nicks. Go to the .com forum and in the outward bound section I have posted on the 'Rant Room' thread. I would just like to clarify something regarding the nature of the newsletter i have cut and pasted from my Email. The news letter is in fact an excellent newsletter with some great news for USA fans in particular. I hoped that the Nominet decision would be met with a degree of professionalism from both sites. The comments in the newsletter regarding"nay say'ers" is just another swipe at this site and fans who express their opinions about past and present line ups of the band. I have posted on the .com site about my enjoyment of the various line ups but it seems to fall on deaf ears. They only want to continue to dig and provoke anyone who is seen to not toe the party line. That's why i have continued to post my honest opinions on both sites to show I'm not going to be intimidated by snide ,malicious comments instigated by the moderators of the .com site. I will no longer participate on that forum as it is certainly biased. I will, however continue to enjoy the music of Wishbone Ash and sing the band's praises. I will even continue to go see the band live which at the end of the day is what it's all about. Peace keeper, I agree fully with what you say but the matter in the newsletter had to be addressed as far as I'm concerned. Billy

We are a passionate bunch, aren't we? I'm way open to anything Martin is involved in creatively, whether it's playing bass, producing, songwriting, whatever. But I would LOVE to see Martin take the lead in a band, meaning do the majority of the songwriting and play in the style that blew me away (i.e., Wishbone Ash). I like the comment about Argus, Just Testing, Here to Hear, and Reeperbahn. I want to have something to look forward to from my favorite musician. Related to this, but sort of as a side note, I've come to a realization of sorts. I'm noticing that as I get older I'm feeling everything much more deeply. And when I see and hear mature musicians play, I see how they have also grown and can play with a sensitivity and depth that maybe younger musicians can't quite conjure up. Okay, this doesn't always happen. Some musicians lose their chops, I've seen that, too. But from my position, having listened to the recorded music and attended the live performances that I have, I just feel that now is a perfect and prime time for Martin to step out boldly with whatever it is he wants to do. I am 40 years old, and in a recent lament to a friend of mine, I talked about my younger years, when maybe physically (i.e., beauty, power, etc.) I was as at my peak. But you know, I think as we get older we become more ourselves, not less. I want to hear what the years have done to Martin.

I recently got a copy of Ash's latest show in Vegas on DVD..and also a copy of the Arizona show(cd only) where Ted showed and played. Really great stuff! I think the Mudman will be an excellent addition to the band, altho he seemed a bit uneasy (but still excellent) in Vegas. Ted sounded really great and the fans seemed shocked when he took the stage. He didn't miss a beat in Blowin Free either....

Well if you think there's an argument here re the band, you should look at the "first guitar god" thread on the dotcom site; some gun-toting survivalist wants to arm the masses against the Eurocentic pinko-commie liberalist conspiracy overtaking the land of the free. All I did was mention The Dukes of Hazzard... Anyway it puts things in perspective; What's that great line.. "They shot the man who sold the dogs.."

Just been listening to Argus for the umpteenth time and still rate it so highly. In particular 'Throw down the sword' particularly because of the end passage where Ted and Andy mix harmony guitar with a kind of blending tunes ( i don't know the musical term for this ). Fantastic stuff. Do you guys have special sections/guitar riffs/ etc that are special to you?

Chris,
Sorry kid...he (Durante) was old when I was a kid..but was known for his large shnozola...and I was only kidding of course, as were you I'm sure...too many folks on your dad's case...and I know he loves it most of the time....
Ray, I really liked it when the guys would trade riffs live..Ted and Andy did it alot and so did Laurie and Andy...Seems like Jail Bait was one where the did it the most...that's one of the the things I really liked about seeing them live...We'll see alot of that out of Muddy..
Yo Stodd..no politics here man.

I love the Distillation set verson of "Blowin' Free" by the Mark 2 line-up in 1980, precisely for the interplay of the two leads. I really liked the "Granfelt line-up" for the freshness he brought to the old songs; his take on "The King Will Come" with that slightly distorted "Wah-Wah pedal?) introduction really made it his own; rather audacious really! Looking forward very much to see the "Muddy Ash" this April.

In a recording situation the work used can understandably be the work of one or other or all of the musicians in a given band. it's all about getting the right mix down for the integrity of the track/album.In the LIVE setting Andy and Ted worked out who would play which part and BOTH delivered as close to the recording as possible. No slight on Ted,just how it worked out at the time.

Hello. I'd very much appreciate separating "american" dates from actual tour dates "in Canada". Canada is a big, sovereign nation north of "america" in case you guys haven't noticed. We had tickets to see Ash in Calgary, Alberta, Canada back in 1971 when their equipment was stolen in "america" and they never did play up north, at least I never (we) got to see them. So please, a little courtesy for the nation that didn't go to war in Iraq but who did supply the ballot boxes for the Iraqi election, William.

William, by the looks of things, you will need to hitch up the doggs and make the trek across that border to your south if you'd like to see the great Ash. (Look, they don't ever git to Atlanta hardly so you aint gittin no simpathy from me!)
In all seriousness, just fdind the closest city to you and drive it. I have not seen Canada on their schedule...like ever!

Hi Neil, So YOU bought it then! I enquired when it was on Ebay the first time. I asked Helen Turner about it (Ted's daughter) but felt the asking price was WAY over the top for a Hofner Shorty, albeit of interest to fans of Wishbone Ash/Ted Turner. It's not technically a lapsteel if it's the same guitar we are talking about. Did you buy it to use or as an investment Neil? Billy

William, you spent more time in your post blaming the US than talking about Wishbone Ash. Do you really think bad-mouthing the US is the way to get Wishbone Ash to play in Canada? Last time I checked Canada was still part of North America. Or did your country suddenly break apart and become its own continent. What is your real agenda? Go post your grievances on some political US-bashing website because that is where your rhetoric belongs. Not here. This is not a forum for the political ramblings of a fool...

For what it's worth here's my thoughts on the North/South American divide. As a Scotsman I can relate to William's sentiments. Surely most people are aware of the long held grudge the Scots have against the English. They invaded and took control of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The bitter resentment STILL exists for many today.I see some similarities on the American continent. Yes there are many different elements involved and some similarities. There are many Canadians who are decendants of Scots who immigrated over the past couple of centuries or more. They are fiercely proud of their land and sovereignty. However like here in the Uk there's no getting away from the facts. Scots,English,Irish and Welsh (and Cornish some would say)are ALL a collective part of the British Isles. All separate nations but a collective just the same. The American Continent has many 'collective' parts but it's still 'America'. If a Canadian is called 'North American'is that incorrect or an insult? There is a perceived arrogance that exudes from England much the same as is felt by Canadians from the USA.Many Scots have and have had a strong desire to be fully independant of English rule (as they see it) but most recognise the benefit in 'British' government. There are benefits and drawbacks either way.I say recognise the benefits in unity and enjoy your differences without serious contention and bad feeling.Easier said than done ofcourse but each individual can make the choice to get over the past.

I had no idea that either of these issues were happening. Guess I don't get out enough anymore. But loyalty to country is important. Jusk ask any American since 9/11.
Being proud is very important. But remember this line ..(from "mean girls").ad lib here....saying bad things about someone else will not make you smarter, better, or cooler than them. It's all about how you feel about yourself.
So just say good things about yourself and your country, but don't put down others...it only makes you look bad...
That being said, I don't think Williams message was meant to be as insulting as some have taken it.
Rock on..

If William doesn't like the way the tour dates are listed on this website, that's his call as to whether he wants to gripe about it or not. But to bash the US for the unfortunate gear-theft incident(nearly 34 years before!) and for the lack of Canadian dates is completely irrelevant and insulting. Canada is a phenomenally beautiful country and has also produced some outstanding music (and beer!). I won't ever bad-mouth Canada. So why must he bad-mouth the US. I don't think political discussions have a place on websites dedicated to music. If William is unhappy about the lack of Canadian appearances he should, instead of going to the trouble of making irrelevant comments, redirect all of his frustration and badger his local promoters into bring WA into town. I've seen WA in my area twice a year since 2000 because a lot of decent, like-minded individuals have embarked on a grass-roots campaign to keep WA coming back. Just a suggestion...

I think everyone in the world should emigrate. I've done it 3 times, there are positives in every culture. It will solve all the worlds problems. Americans under 21 should go live in Iraq for 2 years. Iraqis should go & live in America for 2 years. Mexicans should go & live in America, (well they'll all be there by 2010 anyway), All Scotsmen should drink English beer for a year, Englishmen should wear kilts, change their name to Jimmy & be the only people allowed to watch Celtic v Rangers games . Everyone should live in Canada for a year, Beautiful people, very tolerant, During the winter youre too busy shovelling snow to get ticked off with anyone.
All territorial claims ie. Cashmir, should be decided by a one day game of cricket. And finally everyone in the world should be given a CD of Wishbone Ash's 'Everybody needs to have a friend' to promote love & Good will.

FANTASTIC COMMENTS GUYS! Confirms what i've always thought.....Decent folk love Wishbone ash music! The music appeals to people who are maybe a bit deeper and philosophical. The lyrics are usually thought provoking and the music is very innovative and challenging. Father Ted....I'm with you 100% when it comes to Scots drinking English beer.I've been spoiled with choice at my local who have introduced me to the wonderful world of REAL ALE and mainly Yorkshire micro breweries. FANTASTIC! I'm all for living in Canada for at least a year! Wonderful country! Nothing wrong with the USA either! I'd love to spend some time touring the WHOLE OF THE AMERICAN CONTINENT.As for people of the world sharing cultures and experiences....SURE. We are ALL more alike than we are sometimes aware of. Hi folks, I just read Andy Powell's latest German tour report and like hlj I'm suitably impressed with some of the material they are including. Has anyone any comments about the vocals on this tour. I'd like to think there are more vocal harmonies. Does Muddy sing? Andy's voice isn't bad but it grates after a while. It's a feature of the music that has suffered for a while. The music needs more vocal texture in my opinion. Can't see where it's gonna come from though.Nice to see Bob Skeat's comment regarding the band beginning to feel like a band again. Yep glad it's Friday too hlj!

Andy is not too bad a singer, but they could use another lead vocalist. I don't think Muddy is that in to singing tho. No Claire Hamill please. Birchy had a good voice.
I don't care who's singing now. I just want them to do a new album. They say soon. I hope so.

Has Backbones just been re-released already? I thought it was a few monhs old. There's quite a positive review in this month's MOJO magazine- the piece mentions "Beautiful packaged set" etc, summing up the collection as "Perfect for lapsed fans and die-hards, rewarding for the curious". It's a shame the reviewer then gives it only 3 stars (out of 5) which might put off the potentially "curious" buyers out there. Never mind, any publicity is good publicity, as they say...

I think the review in Mojo was a very fair rating. Obviously we fans find it hard to be overly critical of the band and just as offended when a review is not overly gushing but it said a lot of positive things. All in all it was on the money. *** is about right from an unbiased standpoint. Hopefully the next album will be even better received...it needs to be! Billy

In life it's good to reminisce about the good ole days; but we all have to move on......
Ted moved on in 73, then he reminisced in the 80's.. then took up Skiing. SU reminisced then figured Axe wineries paid more. AP reminisced & figured he was a great guitarist & that he had a marketable vehicle; WA.
Laurie Wisefield moved on & became a recognized talented journeyman guitarist. MT moved on & put his soul into production. Scottsmen moved on from Tartan bitter to Mc Callums. It's good to keep on moving on.

In response to the Fubbster, I have to agree somewhat. We do need to move on. Change is what makes us miserable at times, yet it's for the best. (most of the time)..However, one of the reasons I love records (CD's, etc)is that they DO help us remember times, places, feelings from the past. They are a frozen timepiece from our past that we can go revisit whenever we want. Get those feelings again, relive those teenage years in our minds. We all do it. Especially with the Ash music.
If you want a blast from the past, stick on a record. If you long for those days..hey, join the crowd...we all do. That's cool. I miss those days. But you know what? I need something new from TODAY that I can remember 20 more yrs from now. So let's get recordin! But let's never forget the old days. They are what made us who we are today!
Nuttin wrong with wishing for Andy and Ted and Marty to be playin again...heck, I do too...
Happy Ash Wednesday y'all.

Hey guys this is a long shot, but I'm trying to track down the few WA CDs I haven't got, one of which is "Twin Barrels Burning" - does anyone have a copy of htis that they'd be willing to sell, or know of anyone selling one? Managed to get "Raw To The Bone" recently and although it's not at all what you'd expect from WA, I enjoyed it as a mid-80s melodic rock type thang.Any help on this would be gratefully received! Woo hoo! Haha!!! I'm smiling from ear to ear! I can't stop. I'm even feeling a little shaky. This is the BEST THING I've heard in a long time and really gives me something to look forward to from my favorite musician. Martin, you are prime and I can't wait.
I've said it before, but I've listened to a lot of music, seen a lot of bands, and met a lot of musicians. I'm not a "groupie", it's not a female/male sexual thing or anything like that. It's all about the music for me. Nothing and no one in my musical experience since I danced in my play pen to the Beatles until this day at 40 years old has ever hit me as hard as Martin has.
Thank you is not enough.

This is great, and long awaited news!
While some artists continue to put out records long after they have run out of new ideas, or inspriations, I have every confidence Mr. Turner has some new great material on the way.
Hope the troubles of the last couple years are only history now, and that we can all enjoy Martin's return to creating and performing for some time to come.

If Marty is going to start jammin more this year..well...I hope so. With a couple of decent guitarists, he could really make a comeback. He just needs to realize who his core of fans are and the type of music they expect. If he does that the sky's the limit.

Just to pick up on HLJ's comments about Martin getting on the road with Wishbone Ash material. Has anyone got any favourite songs that they have seldom,if ever heard live, that they'd like Martin to consider? I'm sure he'd be interested to hear and maybe persuaded with the requests! I know he would like to revisit some favourites that don't get played. Whoever Martin choses to play along with him I hope they are able and prepared to sing harmonies as well as being great guitarists. There has been a thread on the .com site forum regarding WA vocalists. The best vocalist is in fact the group harmonies. The sum total of at least the 2 guitarists and the bass player singing and playing. It gives the music it's best delivery when they are ALL singing and playing.Martin, Andy and Ted were, and will always be the collective vocal sound of WA. I always thought Andy and Martin sounded and complimented each other very well. Martin's quality of singing is without doubt the most distinctive and pleasant. Andy is not a solo singer as far as i'm concerned, he needs to have a vocalist in front of his vocals if that makes sense. Martin's range is not what it was but that's OK by me. He has shown he can adapt and still deliver a great song. One song that really showed Martin's singing ability is still great is the song 'Some Conversation' From 'Strange affair' I'd love to hear that song done live. No matter what it's brilliant that Martin has seized the moment and is going to do what he does best! Can't wait! Billy
PS Bobby Cameron, you say you are going to be back in England in a couple of months. Do you realise it could coincide with the WA Spring tour!!!! If you can manipulate the circumstances it would be brilliant to get together for a WA gig or two!!! Maybe even Martin's WA as well!!! Here's hoping! Billy

Billy asks what songs Martin should play when he tours. It would be positive if the set list was totally different to what Andy and co play, that way it would complement rather than directly compete with it. But there is a wealth of material which rarely (if ever) gets a look in. Martin should concentrate on the songs which were either written by or heavily feature his vocal talents: Cosmic Jazz, Lost Cause, Walk on Water, Bolans Monument, Some Conversation, some of the tracks on Nouveau Calls, Haunting Me, Insomnia, Time and Space, New Rising Star, Lifeline, Like a Child, Front Page News, You Rescue Me, Everybody Needs, Sorrel, Persephone, Valediction, etc, etc. Would also love to hear some of the Reeperbahn album live. Just got back from Holland .had a great time at the Helmond gig it was good to meet up with the dutch fans. The Plato was packed out and rockin. There were seven of us over from Perth a couple of my mates had never seen W.A. play before They were blown away. A brilliant start with In the skin. Then a couple of hours of pure magic . They finished with hard on you. It always is when the gigs over. Ben said wait till Muddy settles in and youll see what a great player he is .Well I can only echo what Andy said of him after they played Ancient Remedy You are Cosmic Maaaaaan and he was He seems to have settled right in. I cant believe how lucky we are that we have another Musical Maestro in the band I shouldnt say lucky its down to Andy and Ben. The set felt really fresh to me with just a few changes .The Pilgrim. Rock n Roll Widow And in the Skin Were all great to hear again.I was lucky enough to see them in California in december and I really noticed the difference a few months have made . I was really sad When Ben left but he certainly aint left us in the lurch .Keep on rockin Wishbone ash....

Andy Powell has done a great job with the song list his group performs, bringing back the early MK1 stuff, as well as newer things. Still the MK1 Reunion stuff is currently missing from the stage. Looking forward to Martin taking care of that!

The news page talking about Martin playing live again also talks about his passion for Wishbone Ash. Reading between the lines, it would seem he will be playing at least some Wishbone songs.
My apologies for my earlier post that I didn't mention interest in his solo material. I guess since his songs from Hear to Here were largely written during his days with the Wolfgang, I tend to lump them in with Wishbone.

sorta broke a promise to myself by posting on this site again but here goes:
i am sure many of us are looking forward to whatever it is that martin has planned for this year, and will turn out to see him. but i hope the event does not get spoilt by any more petty arguments over the name. it disheartens me to see wishbone ash referred to here as "andy's band" or "the current band".
i do not believe this sort of thing does martin's cause any good, whatever his legal rights may be. wishbone ash is the name of the band featuring andy, muddy, bob and ray and any name martin turner goes out under should not conflict with this or cause divided loyalties between fans.
anyway, enough said at this stage, let's see what happens.

i just re-read what i have written, and in case it's not clear, what i am saying is that some people might not be comfortable about going to see martin if he chooses to use the name wishbone ash. you only have to look at the large number of people who currently stay away from this site to realise there must be some truth in this.

for evryone one that was to stay away, Im sure there will be another five who decide to go. Think positive. It is without doubt that Martin Turner benefits through Andy Powell's touring work and the attraction to the earlier catalogue it brings (think royalties..). Ditto Andy Powell would benefit from Martin Tuner touring creating even further awareness in the back catalogue = greater royalties for all. And it is without doubt that MT touring under a "WA" type banner would attract more attention to the back catalogue (which again, REMEMBER benefits ALL)than if he toured under his own name. Right? AS for conflict. There simply would be no conflict...unless both acts were playing the same songs and touring the same time, which would be unlikely. The situation would have positive aspects for ALL. But Mike is right, this shouldnt be used as an opportunity to knock ANY member of the band past or present. That helps no one. Ultimtaely the music - in whatever guise, under what name and performed by whom - is there for those who want it. Those who feel uncomfortable need not attend. Obviously in an ideal world we would have AP and MT working together, but lets be honest, it aint gonna happen folks, so lets appreciate the best of both worlds if it is presented to us in that way rather than bitching over a bloody brand name. We, as fans, have no say in how the music is presented to us and in what format. We simply have three choices 1) Bitch and moan over petty issues 2) Go see all WA related artists and enjoy each one on its own merit (eg let the music speak for itself) 3) Pick out the elements we like and support them, and stay clear of anything that is not to our taste (eg. dont moan, simply just dont go..saves a lot of stress!) Finally, remember the words of Andy Powell who himself said that Wishbone Ash is no longer a set list of band member names, but a "concept"!! There has been some constructive comment here since the original board came back, let's not go down that old band vs new band route again. ALL the music and performances are there for our ENJOYMENT. Lets make the most of it...NONE of these guys will be around forever.

Hi Mike Tarling, In reply/response to your reference to my using the term "Andy's band" It's only fair to point out that Andy himself made a point of stating that, and I quote, "This is MY Band!" As Fee Nicks rightly said, Andy has stated many times that Wishbone Ash is more of a concept than a certain group of individuals in a band. Surely the concept can be extended to include the projects of original members especially the guy who came up with the name in the first place. Now I'm not getting into this old arguement again. Let's move on and ENJOY THE MUSIC FROM THEM ALL. Respectfully Billy.

I remember Andy and Steve used the law: a "cease and desist order" to stop Ted from touring as Wishbone Ash at least once, I don't think Martin would run the risk of that plus I would imagine he would not wish to limit himself to playing only WA music anyway(?) I recall the awful mess Yes got themselves into when Chris Squire owned the name and practically all the others got together to tour as "Anderson, Howe..etc" performing "an evening of Yes music". Even that lot got together eventually- though their stature was such that they were probably guaranteed a fortune to settle their differences. Lets just hope for a cracking Martin Turner Band experience and see what we get?

Good point Stod. Business is business and if Andy has the name then Martin can't use it...even if he did write and sing alot of the music. But that doesn't stop him from playing it, thank goodness. I think he should have Wishbone Ash somewhere in his marquee, indicating his connection to the band. For us diehards, it's not a big deal..but for the casual fan, they need to see that name to bring them to the venues or to buy the records....but then again...are there any casual fans???
It's probably all a moot point for us in the US as I don't really see them coming here any time soon. :-(

For those of us who were to young to see Wishbones Mark 1 lineup, it is fair to say that there isnt the nostalgia there that some readers have for them. My first album was Front Page News, i bought No Smoke without Fire in 78, saw them in 1980 on the Just Testing Tour and as far as i am concerned, the Wisefield lineup is as relevant as any other. I just listened to the Lost Pearls cd for the first time and hearing Hard on You, Sheriff of Sherwood etc reminded me how good that line up was. I would agree with previous comments that more of the Mark 2 songs should be played. Come in From the Rain, Front Page News, You Rescue Me etc need played but also some of the more melodic stuff such as Persephone, need Martins vocals. Wisefields guitar style for me is second to none. Listen to his playing on Phoenix, Living Proof, Helpless from the 83 Marquee video plus the studio version of You See Red and you will see what i mean. The difference between his playing and Teds for me was emotion. When i hear Wisefiled play, there is a certain something in the sound that plays on the old heart strings. Mind you, it could be that i did a lot of my courting to the sound of Front Page News. Those were the days!!

Perhaps Martin's new band could call themselves 'Wishbone Ash Through The Eyes of Martin Turner' a la BJH.
Mark, as for Ted's Les Paul, how much are we talking about? When and for how long did Ted own this guitar??

Gordon, not sure how long Ted owned the guitar for but i do know he had it in the early 90's and used it live after his PRS was stolen and im told it was the guitar he used on "live in chicago". When Ted left Wishbone he was living in Chicago and also helping out in a music store there called "The music store" and became friends with the owner of the store, John Shaw. John bought the guitar from Ted and sold it in his shop to the guy i bought it from 2 years ago. I have spoken to John Shaw personally and he was happy to confirm this story and also supplied me with a letter of confirmation which i will pass on when i sell the guitar along with photographs of Ted playing the guitar with Wishbone and also a photo of Ben Granfelt onstage playing the guitar stood with Andy Powell who said he remembered it well.

I believe the current wishbone ash bluesy approach gives Martin a great opportunity to do his own stuff and to incorporate some of the wonderful mark2 songs which rarely get an airing. I'm not taking sides here-this town is big enough for the both of 'em: just trying to make a positive suggestion. If only Laurie could be tempted from his no doubt lucrative sinecure in the west end, playing Queen rubbish to tourists.. (ok, that was a bit negative...)

HI All, There's a discussion going on in the www.wishboneash.com Forum. In the concerts section the thread is titled 'Too blue for you' Interesting to hear the various opinions of the fans regarding the volume of blues songs in the band's set at the moment. This was discussed before when Muddy just joined the band. Anyone who was at Ashcon last year when he made his debut appearance will have sussed that Muddy is a rooted bluesman. It was muted before by some fans including myself that we'd expect more blues in order to help Muddy get established with the band before he managed to work on some of the back catalogue which is not so blues oriented. From what has been reported recently by some fans who have seen the band in the States and Germany/Europe etc,Muddy has been getting to grips with the less bluesier material. I still feel that the band will shift more in the blues/boogie direction, not only because of Muddy but Andy Powell also. Maybe Martin's band (when it gets up and running) will help to counterbalance the music for the fans who don't really want too much blues when they go see Wishbone Ash. There is a wealth of material too choose from. The mark2 WA material seems to be getting more and more neglected. Would be great if Martin could delve into it and put a setlist together with a lot of that stuff. Roll on. Billy

I was going to say "Great minds think alike" but that would have been ammunition for some snipers who are hiding in the shadows! LOL As I said in my last post, Martin will hopefully fill the gap that some of us perceive. Billy

714, I second your post! My introduction to WA was No Smoke Without Fire and Just Testing (albeit not until 1989!) and I was floored that I had missed out on the band for so long. After Front Page News and There's the Rub, I ventured into the MK I albums (Argus, etc) and, though I like 'em all, there is something about the MK II output that just invites more repeated listening on my part. You See Red was a song that hit me right away, not just because of the guitar fireworks and superb rhythm but also because of the lyrics. Luckily for me, during the many gigs I've been to here in the US recently, several MK II songs have been performed: You See Red, Come in From the Rain, Persephone, FUBB, Living Proof and Master of Disguise. Laurie's songs often get a trashing in WA circles because of his vocals but I tend to like his songs and he remains my favorite WA guitarist ever (no offence to AP, of course). I still hold out hope that Laurie will be involved in a higher profile project someday.

not much of a profile- playing some one else's music anonymously in a show band!!? You may as well send in your guitar part by telephone. Agree with stod- he's probably getting a good wedge, so fair play to him, all the same.

One important fact about this discussion about Laurie Wisefield is that he was a good songwriter. Now it is about 20 years since he quit. During all these years he maybe written something.Even if he don't have time to tour he should be able to write music together with someone.

Hey Brian, I was in Vegas in January, and there were ads all over for this show. I suspect it was the same show, but maybe a different line-up of players, I don't know.
If it was Laurie, maybe there are other chances to see him yet this year in the USA.

Gordon, your idea about there being two Wishbone Ash's in a similar vein to Barclay James Harvest is a good one, but as far as I'm aware, that situation was by mutual agreement between John Lees (who teamed up with founder member Wooly Wolstenholme for his version of BJH) and Les Holroyd (whose BJH band featured the late Mel Pritchard). Would Messrs Powell & Turner be able to make a similar agreement? I recall reading in the 'Blowing Free' book about Ted Turner being swiftly brought to task when he attempted to tour as Wishbone Ash in the early 80's! I myself, although I am a supporter of the original Wishbone Ash (yes, the current version is the original band - his continued membership/leadership throughout 35 years should leave this in no doubt), would also support a band led by Martin, I posted on here a good while ago that I did think that Martin may have lost his creative spark, but it looks as if I may be proved wrong. And I'm very glad about that!

Hi Gary, In one word NO. Been going a while, checked it out years ago. 2 Wishbone Ash's? Will NEVER happen. Martin Turner with a reference to WA? Yeah maybe. As i said before, it's about the music and the musicians standing or falling on their own merit IMHO. Wishbone Ash as it is relies very much upon material written/co written between the original members which gives martin every right to play the music but it would be utterly counter productive to try to go on the road as Wishbone Ash. Wishbone Ish maybe. There has to be a distinction.

Vol 1 - Wishbone Ash.
Vol 2 - Pilgrimage.
Vol 3 - Wishbone 4.
Vol 4 - Argus.
Vol 5 - There's the Rub.
Vol 6 - New England.
Vol 7 - Front Page News.
Vol 8 - No Smoke Without Fire.
Vol 9 - Just Testing.
Vol 10 - Here To Hear.

Correct me if I'm wrong ACEG but what you are saying is....if you havn't been able to master the art of bass playing having listened over and over again to these excellent examples of bass playing then you aint gonna get it with no master class now! the songs remain timeless, although 33 years old ARGUS still is valid in 2005.i bought the original vinyl record in 1972 and still play it a lot.it actually sounds better in vinyl than cd.the first concert in aberdeen in 1971 had about 400 at the music hall.only about a third full but they had people on their feet cheering after the first number .HAPPY TIMES

Like all of us Martin Turner / Wishbone Ash fans who remember the days when the two names were inextricably linked - the current situation of any Wishbone band existing without him is obviously not the ideal scenario. However, this is the way it has been for a decade. I would therefore like to add to some of the comments posted earlier.
"Wishbone Ash" as it manifests itself these days is clearly Andy's band and to be fair - like it or not - he is doing a very good job of it. Although I would prefer M.T. to be a participating member - one cannot deny that even without him both "Illuminations" and "Bona Fide" are fine albums; definitely in the tradition of what we think of as Wishbone albums. They have all the necessary elements and do tend to reinforce Andy's view that W.A. is a ‘concept’ rather than a group of specific i |
